Spurs' best chance of a win in remaining games
Our record against two of the bottom three is poor. We dropped four points against Leicester and three against Ipswich. We did gain our best league win of the season away to Southampton in December, despite the absence of several key players. Four of those goals were scored in the first 25 minutes. All were scored in the first half.
In truth, this game (tomorrow 2pm) is our best chance of a win in our remaining games, and while we do have a comfortable gap above the bottom three, such a win would calm our nerves regarding that faint chance of relegation. "The Saints" are at risk of confirming relegation, should they fail to beat us, after Wolves beat Ipswich.
Southampton have managed just two league wins all season, but they came very close to beating in-form Crystal Palace on Wednesday night. Nigerian striker Ebere "Paul" Onuachu is Southampton's top league goalscorer and his fourth of the season put "The Saints" ahead of Palace, who scraped a draw with an added time equaliser.
Southampton could be relegated earlier than any previous Premier League team, and they are still one point shy of Derby's record low of 11 in 2008.
Russell Martin was sacked after our 5-0 away win. "Saints" appointed Croatian Ivan Juric as their replacement. He had been sacked earlier in the season by Roma. He's managed just one league win (away to Ipswich) and one FA Cup win - against Martin's former team Swansea.
Southampton have won just one of their past nine matches against Tottenham in all competitions (D3, L5). The four most recent meetings have produced 21 goals in total.
Son has scored 13 goals in all competitions against The "Saints". 11 of these goals were in the Premier League, his highest tally versus any opponent in the division. If selected tomorrow, Son will make his 450th club appearance becoming only the seventh player to reach that figure for Spurs.
With eight games left, Spurs are 16th, and could well finish outside
the top 10 for the first time in 17 years. They are now battling to
avoid their worst season in the Premier League era.
Our lowest Premier League finish remains 15th in 1994 under Ossie Ardiles - when survival was only ensured in our penultimate match. We have now lost 16 league games this season - our record in a 20-team league is 19, set in 2003-04.
Since the Premier League's inception in 1992, only six times have
Spurs lost 16 or more league matches in a campaign. Spurs' lowest points tally in a Premier League season - and in fact since three points for a win was introduced in 1981 - is 44. We need 11 points from their final eight games to pass that tally.
With 16 defeats in 30 matches, Spurs' loss percentage this season
is 53% - and they haven't lost more than half of their league matches
over a whole season since 1934-35. They lost exactly half of their
league matches in 1953-54, 1974-75, 1976-77 - when they were relegated - and 2003-04.
Ange Postecoglou has only won 44 points from his past 39 league matches in charge - stretching back over the end of last season. Ange said that Van de Ven came off before the end of Thursday night's game with a touch of cramp. I suspect he might be rested tomorrow for next Thursday's key Europa League match. There's a chance that Richarlison might be involved tomorrow, and I expect there will be some rotation in various positions for this game.
Southampton's player to watch (if selected) is 19-year-old Tyler Welsh under-21 international Tyler Dibling, tagged by some as "the new Gareth Bale" earlier in the season. Dibling has been used sparingly in recent games. "The Saints" have slapped a hefty £100 million price tag on Dibling with Spurs names as one of the interested clubs.
I think "the Saints" will scare us with a shock goal, but that we will overcome and win 3-1. Here's hoping!
Michael Salisbury is refereeing Spurs for the first time this season and only the fourth time in all. His one game with us last season was a December '23
home defeat to West Ham. Let's hope for better tomorrow!
Did you know? - Garry Brooke, who died aged just 64 in January, made his home debut for Spurs on Boxing Day 1980 and scored his first two senior goals in a 4-4 draw against Southampton. Garry was very much a part of the 1981 FA Cup-winning squad and scored one of our two goals in the fourth round away to Hull. It was Garry who replaced a forlorn Ricky Villa in the first drawn game against Manchester City at Wembley. Garry came off the bench in both the final games in 1982 against QPR.
