I fear defeat at Molineux
Thanks to Eugene Gasper for this picture
We travel to Molineux tomorrow (2pm - not on UK TV) for a tricky game against a re-invigorated Wolves side which has won their last three games. Whilst Ange Postecoglou reports no new injuries following Thursday night's game, I expect he will rotate the team on a large scale, bearing in mind next week's crucial second leg of the Europa League quarter-final in Frankfurt.
When we hosted Wolves in our last game of 2024 their new coach Vitor Pereira had won his first two games - away to Leicester and at home to Manchester United. They gave us a good run for our money and scored a late equaliser through Norwegian striker Strand Larsen.
Larsen is in good form and has scored in Wolves' last three games, each of which they have won. He's on loan from Celta Vigo, but that is likely to turn into a permanent purchase. Larsen has scored 11 league goals and is just two behind Brazilian Matheus Cunha, who has scored 6 goals in his last 8 games, including FA Cup goals at Blackburn and Bournemouth, where Wolves lost a penalty shoot-out.
When Wolves came to Tottenham at the end of December, they were in a precarious position, just one point above the bottom three. That gap has now stretched to 12 points, and last week's win at Ipswich was celebrated in a manner which suggested the Wolves connections felt they were staying up. They are not yet mathematically safe, but with their form and four home games to play (including one against Leicester), Wolves are entitled to feel confident. The appointment of Pereira has worked very well.
24-year-old midfielder Joao Gomes has signed a new five-year deal at Wolves. The club also have the option to extend it by a further year, while there's understood to be no release clause in the Brazilian midfielder's contract. Gomes was signed in January 2023 from Flamengo in Brazil.
When we played Wolves in December, we'd lost 9 league games. We've lost seven more, but we have won four of our last 8 league games.
Wolves shocked us with two added time goals in our last visit here as long ago as November 2023. Spurs went into the game hampered by two suspensions (Romero and Udogie) and more injuries (Van de Ven, Maddison and Richarlison) which led to three changes to the back four where Eric Dier made his first start of the season paired with Ben Davies, making his second Premier League start of 23/24. Dier played two more games for us before his move to Bayern Munich, where he is still a very active team member.
This weekend sees the Premier League using semi-automated system for offside decisions. Hopefully, such referrals can be resolved far quicker than the five minute delay over Lucas Bergvall's disallowed goal against Southampton last week.
I am afraid to say I fear our 17th league defeat of the season tomorrow. Wolves will be desperate to confirm their Premier League status as soon as possible. I predict a 2-1 scoreline.
Anthony Taylor referees Spurs for the 49th time tomorrow. Mr. Taylor is still busy at international and European level and was in Spain on Thursday night for Real Betis's win over Polish side Jagiellonia. VAR Michael Oliver was in charge of potential Europa League semi-final opponents Bodo/Glimt v Lazio.
