Can Spurs lift themselves out of this hiatus?

Welcome to N17

We've reached the halfway point of a season in which we have already lost 9 games, and we languish in the bottom half of the table. We started a Boxing Day game in the bottom half this week for the first time since 2008 when Harry Redknapp almost led us into European contention. We all know of the absences we continue to suffer through injuries and suspension (Djed Spence will have to sit out this game), but can Ange Postecoglou lift us out of this hiatus, or will Daniel Levy be looking for a new appointment?

Under normal circumstances, you'd fancy us to waltz past Wolves, but with a new coach and after two consecutive wins, they are out of the bottom three for only the second time this season, and let's face it, any team fancies their chances against Spurs at the moment. It's a must win this time for our club, and I feel the coach too.

There's another reason Wolves are to be treated with caution, and that's their top scorer, 25-year-old Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha. He's scored 10 goals in the Premier League this season and in his last three games. Like Son's last goal in the League Cup quarter-final against Manchester United, Cunha's last goal on Boxing Day against the same team was direct from a corner.

Cunha had no less than three entries in the BBC November goal of the month choices. Two were scored against Fulham and one at home to Bournemouth. Cunha was also nominated three times for the Premier League award - a first in EPL history. Wolves might struggle to keep hold of him in January. There are three clubs in the league (both Manchester teams and us!) who have the funds and the need for his flair.

However, Cunha is facing an FA ban after appearing to strike a member of Ipswich Town's security staff on the back of the head before tearing off his glasses in a post-match meltdown.

A statement from the FA, released on 17th December, said the 25-year-old Brazilian had "allegedly acted in an improper manner after the final whistle" of the Premier League game at Molineux on 14th December, which Wolves lost 2-1. This, of course, was one of Ipswich's two Premier League wins to date. You all know the other one occurred!

After that home defeat at Molineux Rayan Ait-Nouri was sent off in the tunnel after ugly scenes in which he had to be held back from confronting Ipswich players.

Wolves coach Gary O’Neil was sacked the day after their home defeat to Ipswich. His replacement is Vitor Pereira, aged 56, who has been coaching for 10 months in the Saudi Pro League with Al Shabab. Pereira had previous experience with Porto, Olympiacos and Fenerbahce and has won league titles in Portugal, Greece and China during an extensive managerial career. He came close to replacing Rafael Benitez as Everton manager in 2022. Mr. Pereira has had a good start to his Wolves career with those two wins!

Earlier in the season Mario Lemina was stripped of the Wolves captaincy after fighting with team-mates. To say all has not been well with the club is an understatement!

Last season Wolves completed a third league double over Spurs, the last of which was in 2009-10. They've now won four of our last five top flight meetings and have won three consecutive times against Spurs. Their first league double over Spurs was in 1953-54. Wolves, managed by Stan Cullis won the League Championship for the first time that season. Both matches were refereed by a Reverend SV Davis!

Gary O'Neil became the first manager to win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with two different clubs, after guiding Bournemouth to a 3-2 victory in April 2023.

Jose Sa remains Wolves' number one keeper, but Wolves did sign Sam Johnstone (once of West Brom!) from Crystal Palace in the summer. Norwegian striker Strand Larsen was signed on loan from Celta Vigo and has scored 6 goals in his 18 EPL games. Wolves are no doubt missing Pedro Neto who signed for Chelsea and centre-back Max Kilman, who signed for West Ham.

Spurs' desperate lack of personnel continues. Ben Davies has had a set-back and will not be available for two weeks. Postecoglou is hoping that Radu Dragusin may yet be able to play tomorrow, otherwise we need an emergency centre-back. That could either be Yves Bissouma, or a full debut for 18-year-old Alfie Dorrington. It would be a big step for either player, and I am loathe to express any confidence about us getting the win. The game is not being televised in the UK, and kicks off at 3pm tomorrow.

Chris Kavanagh referees Spurs for the third time this season, and for the first time at home. He previously took charge of our opening day draw at Leicester and the 3-0 win at Old Trafford. Mr. Kavanagh is one of the top current officials and has been in the middle for 12 EPL games this season. He is also seen in European matches.
