Spurs secure valuable away win

Leeds v Spurs - 04.10.25

Thanks to Greg Smith for the picture.

With this valuable win at Elland Road, Spurs extended two sequences and brought an end to another. Prior to this game they had lost their last eight games preceding an International break. The last team they beat in such a situation was Luton in October 2023. Now, by beating another promoted team they have ended that miserable run.

Spurs extended sequences were consecutive wins over Leeds (five) and unbeaten games in all competitions this season (seven). It was also refreshing to win a Premier League game after two preceding draws. Ten of our fourteen points have been gathered away from home and before the afternoon and evening games we climbed to second place, which is a very healthy position.

Thomas Frank made 6 changes to his starting line-up after the Bodo/Glimt game with Romero, Udogie, Palhinha, Simons, Kudus and Tel replacing Danso, Spence, Bergvall, Sarr, Johnson and Richarlison. Daniel Farke has fielded the same eleven for Leeds' last four Premier League games. Leeds had also had a full week's break since their last game.

Man of the match Mohammed Kudus secured the win with his first Spurs goal and also recorded the assist for Mathys Tel's first goal of the season.

With Storm "Amy" having passed over the UK, there had been rain, but the game started in bright sunshine, but in breezy conditions. The first half was played with high energy, perhaps a little frantic, leading to errors on both sides. No doubt non-partisans were thoroughly entertained. Both sides hit the woodwork and scored in the opening half.

Teeming rain arrived after the break, and the game became less frantic, but there were still chances at either end.

Spurs kicked off and played towards the North Stand with their fans located in the south-west corner. Early on Micky van de Ven faced a challenge when Calvert-Lewin raced down the right wing, but Micky's pace and strength was too much for the former Everton player. He and the home fans expressed their frustration at the referee's failure to punish Van de Ven, and this frustration would be a theme for the afternoon.

Leeds won an early corner on the left, after which a shot by Stach went out of play off his captain Ethan Ampadu. After 8 minutes, former Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff swung a free kick over the Spurs defence and former Spur Joe Rodon's header hit the post with Vicario losing his footing and failing to gather the ball.

After their first decent build-up Palhinha hit a shot from the edge of the box just over the target. Palhinha demonstrated his passing ability soon after, threading a ball to Kudus but left back Gabriel Gudmundsson got the better of Kudus on this occasion.

Xavi Simons enjoyed his role as "number 10", if not always succeeding with his passes, but after he and Kudus combined and a pass to Odobert, Rodon won his defensive challenge.

Destiny Udogie got the nod over Djed Spence today and thrived with plenty of overlapping moves. He made a run for Xavi before hitting a cross/shot which rebounded clear off the chest of goalkeeper Darlow.

Palhinha cleared another Leeds corner, safely out of play for a throw-in. Kudus took an early booking before sending Tel away with a pass from half-way. Tel raced for goal down the right channel and wasn't going to be prevented from hitting a powerful right-footed shot which beat Darlow high to his left after taking a deflection.

Soon after, Bentancur lost the ball in a dangerous position, but Calvert-Lewin was thankfully off target with a good chance to score. Udogie raced forward again, passing inside to Tel who fed Kudus. Kudus's shot was off target. A Kudus cross from the right beat both Tel and Odobert. Tel needed treatment but was able to continue.

Leeds equalised in the 34th minute. Calvert-Lewin passed inside to Aaronson whose left-footed shot took a deflection and could only be parried by Vicario to the feet of Okafor, who could not miss. Another ball thrown on from the Leeds section floated towards Vicario's right post but was deemed not to have hampered play.

Longstaff had a good chance to score after Pedro Porro had over-run the ball on the right flank. Thankfully Longstaff missed.

At the other end after a Pedro Porro free kick and a touch by Xavi Simons, Bentancur's right-footed effort went over the bar. Xavi combined with Udogie again before Odobert crossed and Tel's header rebounded off the bar with Darlow's hand very close.

At half-time, it was anybody's game.

Leeds kicked off, but Spurs soon had a good move down the right wing. Bentancur and Kudus combined before Pedro Porro crossed and the goalkeeper parried.

Vicario made a good save with his legs from Calvert-Lewin, who had been teed up by Okafor. Leeds then crossed dangerously from the right, but Spurs survived.

Udogie was our deepest player in the Leeds area but had no support. His cross passed the area. Ampadu was booked for a nasty foul on Pedro Porro. This incident must have been borderline for a red, but VAR decreed the referee's yellow was correct. With Pedro Porro off the pitch temporarily, Kudus hit a soft left-footed free kick to the goalkeeper.

Spurs took the lead after Pedro Porro hit a long ball down the right wing. Kudus seemed to anticipate that Gudmundsson was going to fail, and when the ball came inside the left back, Kudus took it on before beating Darlow with a low left-footed shot inside the keeper's left post. That shot took a slight deflection too.

Leeds v Spurs - 04.10.25

Thanks to Andy Park for the picture. Mohammed Kudus upset the Leeds fans when sitting down in front of them to celebrate!

Udogie was deep inside the area again, receiving from Xavi, before threatening with another dangerous cross. Joe Rodon headed over at the other end from another Longstaff free kick.

A nice Spurs build-up ended with Xavi chipping a pass inside the box on the right, but Pedro Porro hit the side netting with his shot.

Now it became a case of Spurs managing the game. There were substitutions on both sides, punctuated by off target efforts by Longstaff and Bogle. Richarlison won a corner when taking an opportunity with a shot that was deflected. Vicario punched out a Calvert-Lewin header but had been fouled anyway. In added time, the Spurs keeper made an excellent save from substitute Piroe. Udogie was on hand to head the rebound out for a corner. That was taken by Longstaff but headed over by Struijk.

After a full seven minutes of added time, Spurs were able to celebrate their third away win of the season with gusto.

Our next game will be at home to Aston Villa on Sunday 19th October.
