The last rites in Europe

Spurs v Copenhagen, 04.11.25

I'll be honest, despite having booked my match ticket and travel, after last week's fiasco, I was not going to bother attending this game, thinking I would watch in the comfort of my home, some 150 miles north of N17. However, this is likely to be our last competitive European game for a while (not too long I hope), and I want to be able to say, "I was there!"

My first European venture was the 1974 UEFA Cup Final in Rotterdam when we lost the second leg 2-0, after drawing 2-2 at home. I was at both games. In Rotterdam my friend (and best man to be) were fortunately mis-allocated seats well away from the travelling army, who unfortunately brought disgrace upon the club and drew Bill Nicholson to appeal for calm at half-time. I've heard some say that this night was very influential in "Sir Bill"'s decision to retire early the next season. Of course, poor results had everything to do with that, including a 5-2 defeat at Anfield which I mentioned in my preview of Sunday's game.

5-2 has a familiar ring to it, doesn't it? Of course, it's the scoreline of last week's defeat at The Metropolitano. There is significance in the very name of Atletico Madrid, the club that Bill Nicholson's Spurs so magnificently beat 5-1 in 1963 and added to the illustrious history of this great club.

I invoke the spirit of Bill Nicholson to somehow restore our pride in tomorrow night's game, and to aid our Premier League survival. Sunday's result certainly gives us all genuine hope for the remaining Premier League games.

The coach this club needs for the future is one who can lead and inspire. One who knows and respects our history. One who knows and respects his players, offering comfort at the right time.

After 1974, I didn't go back to Europe for football until September 14th 2006 when I organised a coach trip across Europe to see us beat Slavia Prague. There was some misadventure in that trip, but we won 1-0. Our goal was scored by Jermaine Jenas. Jenas was not everyone's favourite, but he did win a League Cup medal when we beat Chelsea in 2008. Jenas also scored our third (89th minute) goal in that fantastic 4-4 comeback at the Emirates in October that year. By then, Harry Redknapp had taken over from trophy-winning Juande Ramos after the infamous "two points from eight games" scenario.

These games are among the many memorable moments I have personally experienced watching Spurs. The one I cherish most was Lucas Moura in Amsterdam, when his hat-trick gave us a first (and only) Champions League Final. My Spurs-loving son Greg has been by my side at most Spurs games over the last 34 years. Jimmy Greaves and Ricky Villa gave me similarly superb moments, and of course there was the 1984 UEFA Cup Final!

At my age (74 in August), my ability to attend games is becoming more limited but I intend to be there next season, come what may.

We must get behind the team tomorrow night and in every game this season. I hope for a respectable scoreline tomorrow and a precious victory on Sunday against Nottingham Forest which is the far more important game.

Igor Tudor has said that Cristian Romero can play tomorrow. Destiny Udogie and Lucas Bergvall will be on the bench. Joao Palhinha is not yet ready and Conor Gallagher is doubtful. Richarlison is suspended after his booking last week.

Micky van de Ven will be playing and gave a press conference today (Tuesday) when he said, "The other day when we read something about one guy that said to everyone that he's probably going to leave and doesn't care about the situation they're in, and then someone reads this and we're just like, "how does this come out?" Like, people just making things up, and it's just frustrating for us as well, because it brings so much more trouble as well, because the fans are starting to believe this, and I start saying like, "oh, the guys, they don't care anymore what's going to happen in the club, about the situation". Trust me, all the people involved on the pitch, the staff, the players, everyone, they care so much about the situation we're in right now, and we just want to turn things around. That's the most important, that's the main focus for everyone. Then, if some reports just start saying that guys don't care anymore, it's just frustrating for our guys."

Referee Daniel Siebert and his officials are from Germany. We have not seen this referee before, but he an experienced official kept busy at home in Europe and in international games. Herr Siebert has had charge of seven Champions League games so far this season.
