Saturday night live or dive?

Audere est Facere

Here we are then, with just six Premier League games to play, three of which we surely need to win to have any chance of survival in the top level. A look at the form guide of the two teams tells you the size of the task before us tomorrow night (5.30pm SKY). Brighton have won five and lost one of their last six games. Spurs have lost five and drawn one. Fancy our chances? I don't. By the time we kick off, Leeds will have played Wolves, and if they win they'll be nine points ahead of Spurs. It's already looking like a three-way battle for survival between us, West Ham and Forest. This will be Saturday night live, or dive.

We'll be better off looking at our 2-2 away draw in September for inspiration, rather than the dismal 4-1 home defeat on the last day of last season. In fairness, that game followed our Europa League triumph in Bilbao. Our last home league win had been in early April against Southampton, who we may or may not meet next season. Spurs have sacked more managers than they've had home league wins since last May (3 to 2).

This will be Roberto de Zerbi's first home game for Spurs against the team he led to 6th place (above Spurs) in 2022/23, and mid-table the following year. De Zerbi gave Brighton a Europa League campaign, where they were knocked out in the round of 16 by Jose Mourinho's Roma. Brighton won their home leg and Danny Welbeck scored the goal. 35-year-old Welbeck remains a true force and has had his two best seasons in terms of scoring in the last two years. He's scored in double figures in both years and has 12 league goals so far this season. Welbeck has even been spoken of by some pundits in terms of perhaps being a back-up for Harry Kane in this summer's world cup. As a former Arsenal player, he'll take great pleasure in continuing his current scoring form against Spurs.

Last week, De Zerbi learned that he would be without Mohammed Kudus (probably for the rest of the season). Now we learn that after last week's shove in the back by Brian Brobbey at Sunderland the his collision with Kinsky, club captain Romero has a knee injury and is also probably going to miss the rest of the season, but perhaps not the world cup.

Spurs will be the last to give us this news (I still haven't seen that). It seems they have been too busy re-jigging their website. On Tuesday, they did wish us a "Happy Vaisakhi". I had to look that up.

Romero has missed 14 of our 46 games so far this season through injury and suspension, and is now destined to miss our last six games. That's a big chunk of what has now become a 52-game season. "Cuti" did score vital goals for us at Newcastle and at Burnley, but his disciplinary record has been a real burden. Kevin Danso won't let us down.

Two players (Kulusevski and Maddison) have been absent through injury the whole season, and we have lost and continue to miss players through countless days of injuries. James Madison has now returned to training, but probably needs a week or two to regain match fitness. Rodrigo Bentancur, whose last appearance was on 7th January, has returned to full training and could appear tomorrow. I suspect Vicario is not yet ready, but have confidence in Antonin Kinsky after his performance against Sunderland.

Brighton will be missing Lewis Dunk who has to serve the second of a two-match suspension for his tenth booking of the season (we know the feeling!). 34-year-old Pascal Gross re-signed for Brighton in January, having left them for Borussia Dortmund in August 2024. Gross previously played 261 games for the "Seagulls" after first joining them in 2017, scoring 32 goals. He's played a full part since re-joining and added one more goal.

On 21st February, in Brighton's 2-0 win at Brentford 40-year-old midfielder James Milner started and made his 654th Premier League outing to break Gareth Barry's long-standing top-flight appearance record. Milner has since made three additional appearances, the last of which was on March 21st. Milner's third Premier League appearance was as an 82nd minute substitute for Leeds on 24th November 2002, when Spurs were managed by Glenn Hoddle and Leeds were coached by Terry Venables.

Spurs' last win over Brighton was two years ago in February 2024. That was a close call, when Brennan Johnson scored a 96th minute winner. Pascal Gross had opened the scoring with a first half penalty. Pape Sarr equalised in the 61st minute.

We have managed just one win over "The Seagulls" in our last five league meetings. September's draw was Brighton's 100th such result in the Premier League.

Spurs have now failed to keep a clean sheet in 46 of their last 50 home games in the Premier League. They have now lost 26 of those games.

We have yet to draw a home Premier League game against Brighton, having won six and lost two of those previous games.

Brighton have every reason to be brimming with confidence tomorrow. Spurs and their fans will be full of trepidation. Roberto is bringing the squad to the stadium early and there will be no mass welcome of the coach. However, we are urged to wear white, and will be issued with flags to wave before the kick-off of both halves. I'm giving up on my predictions, but like the rest of you, I will have everything crossed. We simply have to get behind the team for every remaining match.

Stuart Attwell is in charge of Spurs for the 26th time in 16 years, having first refereed a Spurs game in January 2010. He has been in charge of 20 Premier League games this season including Spurs games at home to Fulham and Sunderland. So far he's lost one, drawn one and now....?

Did you know? Brighton were in the fourth tier of English football for five seasons between 1996/97 and 2000/01 when they were promoted as champions. In 1996/7 they finished 23rd when only one team suffered relegation to non-league football. Brighton survived (only on goal difference) by drawing with the relegated team Hereford on the last day of the season. That game was played on May 3rd 1997. Spurs lost 2-1 at Anfield on that day, and the following week ended the season with a 2-1 home defeat to Coventry. We finished tenth in the Premier League. Manager Gerry Francis lost his job in November that year after another away defeat (4-0) to Liverpool.
