Spurs face a daunting task

The game is about glory

Udinese's Stadio Frulli has been radically modernised since we last visited for Juande Ramos's last game in charge of Spurs in October 2008. Ramos's great claim to fame of course was to be the manager of our last trophy-winning team until Ange Postecoglou's Europa League win in May. That has given us the right to face Champions League winners PSG (Paris Saint-Germain) in this season's European Super Cup. New coach Thomas Frank has a daunting task.

Managed by Luis Enrique, PSG also won Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and the Trophee des Champions before reaching, but losing the Club World Cup Final 3-0 to Chelsea on 13th July.

When PSG beat Inter in the Champions League final in May, it was the first competitive meeting of the two sides. Inter were looking for a first Champions League win since 2010, when with Jose Mourinho in charge, they won a treble. Spurs beat Inter later in 2010 in an exciting Group phase Champions League phase.

This will be our first competitive meeting with the French Champions, managed by Mauricio Pochettino in the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons. Mauricio was a PSG player early this century. We did meet and beat the Paris team 4-2 in a July 2017 friendly, played in Orlando. Future Spur Giovani Lo Celso featured for PSG, while Ben Davies and Brandon Austin are the only current Spurs players who were in our squad.

Paris Saint-Germain beat Inter Milan 5-0 at The Allianz Arena, registering the biggest ever win in a UCL final.

PSG broke the record for the greatest margin of victory in a final of the European Cup or Champions League. Only Real Madrid in 1960 scored more, with seven against Eintracht Frankfurt at Hampden Park. None have scored five in a final since Benfica did two years after Hampden.

Achraf Hakimi, Desire Doue (2), Kvicha Kvaratskhelia and Senny Mayulu scored PSG's goals. 24-year-old Georgian Kvaratskhelia Georgian, was quite the star for PSG after he signed in January from Antonio Conte's Napoli for €70 million

PSG coach Luis Enrique joined Mourinho as one of the seven coaches to have won the European Cup/Champions League with two different clubs. He won the competition with Barcelona in 2015. Carlo Ancelotti is also among the names in this list.

On their path to beat Inter, PSG beat Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal in the knock-out rounds, after disposing of French minnows Brest 10-0 on aggregate in the play-off round. Manchester City were one of PSG's victims in the league phase.

PSG had finished 15th in last season's league phase, during which they lost at Arsenal, at home to Atletico Madrid, and narrowly away to Bayern Munich.

Desire Doue won UEFA's Champions League Young Player of the Season Award. Ousmane Dembele won Best Player of the Season Award in the competition. There were 7 PSG players in UEFA's team of the season.

One player who will not be in the PSG squad is goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma who is subject of transfer speculation. PSG's new goalkeeper signing from Lille, Lucas Chevalier, is expected to feature. PSG have also just signed Bournemouth's Ukrainian centre-back Illya Zabarnyi, but I'd be surprised if he features tomorrow.

Spurs have taken a squad which includes Dominic Solanke and Destiny Udogie, but it remains to be seen if they are fit enough for this game, or for our first Premier League game at home to Burnley on Saturday. Yves Bissouma has been left out of the squad because of persistent lateness. Destiny Udogie was signed from Udinese in August 2022.

Following their somewhat surprising 3-0 Club World Cup Final defeat to Chelsea on July 13th, PSG apparently only returned to full training last week, but judging by our performance in our last friendly at The Allianz Stadium, we have every reason to be afraid regarding tomorrow's result. Another trophy would of course be wonderful, but I'll be happy with a narrow defeat and a fully fit (remaining) squad for Saturday.

PSG's domestic season begins at Nantes on Sunday.

Guglielmo Vicario spent three years with hometown club Udinese but never made a first-team appearance. He'll have far happier memories of his home town than those of us who travelled to see Spurs lose 2-0 in October 2008.

The European Super Cup was created in 1971, but not considered official until the 1973. Initially the competitors were the winners of the European Cup and the Cup-Winners' Cup. Since 2000, the meeting has been between the UEFA Cup/Europa League winners and the Champions League holders. Spurs did not qualify for the Super Cup after their UEFA Cup Final victories in 1972 and 1984.

The match kicks off at 8pm BST, and is being televised here in the UK by TNT Sports. If the scores are level after normal time the match will go straight to a penalty shoot-out. No extra time will be played.

Referee Joao Pinheiro is from Portugal, and since he first refereed Spurs against AZ Alkmaar in March he has officiated in several other European and International games. Mr. Pinheiro's assistants and VAR are also from Portugal, and the same team as in March.

Did you know? - The last time that Spurs opened a competitive season with a "trophy" game was twenty-four years ago on Saturday 10 August 1991 when the Charity Shield (as it was then) was a goalless affair between the North London rivals Spurs and Arsenal. In those days there wasn't a penalty shoot-out and the trophy was shared.

Brian Glanville described the match as "90 undistinguished minutes." The closest either side came to scoring was when Samways crossed for Nayim but Seaman saved his header.
