Is Thomas the new "Tinker man"?
Thanks to Eugene Gasper for capturing this image
If ever an away trip was unwelcome, it's this second midweek journey of the season up the A1 to Newcastle, 300 miles from home. In fairness the "Toon Army" suffers plenty of fixture inconsideration, but for Spurs this is the second such trip in five weeks, after our Carabao Cup exit in October.
You'll remember that cup match ended in a 2-0 defeat, which was our first away defeat of the season. That match followed our last domestic win, when we inflicted an historic first defeat for Everton at their new stadium. We won that match 3-0. On Saturday, Eddie Howe's side blitzed "The Toffees" 4-1, which was their first away win of the season. Centre-back Malick Thiaw scored two of those goals, which were his first for Newcastle since his signing from Milan in the summer. Another signing Nick Woltemade also scored, and he now has five Premier League goals to his name.
This is a battle between 12th and 13th place. Spurs are on the wane and lost their last away league game 4-1 (you know where). Newcastle are climbing and are also in great form at home where they last beat Manchester City in front of a home crowd with a fearsome roar. It's a massive task for Spurs and I see nothing other than defeat tomorrow night (8.15pm - SKY).
I've seen press reports where the Spurs coach and players were unhappy about the booing of Guglielmo Vicario after his ricket against Fulham. Some of those fans will be paying good money for travel, tickets and accommodation because of the extra-late kick-off to accommodate SKY. They'll be placed in the sky-high upper tier at St. James' Park. Spurs fans, deprived for so long of victory at home in the Premier League, and (in my opinion) sufferers of three consecutive defeats can vent if they want to. They've shown their loyalty and enthusiasm up and down the country and across Europe for years.
Don't ask me to predict the team, or the formation, because even with long-standing absentees such as Kulusevski, Maddison and Solanke, Thomas Frank has plenty of talent at his disposal. Early in the season, I admired his ability to switch styles and strategy, and we all understand the needs of two games a week commitments, but Frank is at risk of being labelled the new "tinker man." (Remember Claudio Ranieri at Chelsea 20+ years ago?)
I do think there needs to be some consistency of structure and strategy for the players to understand what is being asked of them.
Newcastle have won six of our last seven competitive meetings. Spurs have now won just one of the last six league meetings with Newcastle. Newcastle won the other five games and have won a league double over us in two of the last three seasons.
In last season's home defeat Alexander Isak became the third Newcastle player to score in seven consecutive Premier League games after Alan Shearer and Joe Willock. Isak extended his run to eight games with two goals in Newcastle's next game against Wolves.
There has not been a 0-0 result in meetings between these two teams since 18th August, 1971. I do not see that record changing tomorrow.
Alan Shoulder, who died in February this year aged 71 was a former miner and Blyth Spartans player plucked from obscurity by Newcastle in December 1978. Shoulder never played top flight football. He played at Newcastle during their 6-year spell in Division Two between 1978 and 1984. Shoulder also never played against Spurs.
Spurs lost their last three league games against Newcastle before their last relegation in 1977. In 1978 when we were promoted at the first time of asking, Newcastle went down and we didn't meet again until their return to the top flight in 1984.
Newcastle have been relegated three times since 1989. Kevin Keegan famously led "The Toon" into the Premier League in 1993, and they've had two single seasons in The Championship since - in 2009/10 and 2016/17.
In February, Newcastle also announced the death of former striker John Tudor, aged 78. Tudor was a strike partner of the prolific Malcolm MacDonald in the seventies, and played in the 1974 FA Cup Final against Liverpool. Tudor's last Newcastle goal was scored against Spurs in a 2-2 draw at St. James' Park in October 1975. Tudor opened the scoring and Stewart Barraclough made it 2-0, but goals by John Pratt and John Duncan in quick succession gave us a share of the points.
Wyn Davies, whose death was announced in July (aged 83) was known as "Wyn the leap." He made 216 appearances for Newcastle between October 1966 and August 1971, scoring 53 goals. A Welsh international, Davies played a prominent part in Newcastle's 1968-69 successful Inter-City Fairs Cup campaign. Signed from Bolton (where he subsequently settled following retirement), Davies also had brief spells with both Manchester sides in the early seventies.
Did you know? - John Lennon's artwork for his 1974 solo album Walls and Bridges includes a depiction of Newcastle's Chilean-born George Robledo scoring the winning goal against Arsenal in the 1952 FA Cup Final. Despite the feats of Erling Haaland (who was born in Leeds), Robledo holds the record for the most football league (not Premier League) goals (33) scored by a foreign-born player in England. Newcastle won the FA Cup in 1952, 1952 and 1955. Robledo scored 39 goals in league and cup games in the 1951/52 season, including a hat-trick in a 7-2 win over champions Spurs on September 1st, 1951. (Postcards From Santiago – The George Robledo Story by Spencer Vignes is published by Biteback (£20).)
Tom Bramall is refereeing Spurs for the fourth time. He last had charge of us for our 2-1 away win again Leeds two months ago.
