Top Three North London Derbies for Spurs fans away from home

the Emirates Stadium - 01.09.19

The North London derby is the one fixture that Arsenal and Spurs fans look forward to more than anything when they are released. With the fixture coming up later in November, both sets of fans are filled with nerves but ultimately filled with hope and optimism that they will have the bragging rights come the end of the game.

With Thomas Frank about to experience his first North London derby, it is only fitting for a trip down memory lane for Spurs fans to remember some of the good times and moments against Arsenal in the Premier League away from home; so sorry no Danny Rose volley moments to relive!

The game against Arsenal is away from home and with the rancid run of luck at home, Frank might be hoping this could be the time to find some form away from home to bring back to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

However, he may want to take inspiration from managers or players of old who have got one over the old enemy so that he is prepared for Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur.

1. Arsenal 2-3 Tottenham Hotspur (November 20 2010, Emirates Stadium)

To kick things off is the away game that broke a huge hoodoo for Spurs as it was the first time in history that Spurs had beaten Arsenal at their new stadium. Not only was it the first time since 1993, the first season of the Premier League, that Spurs had prospered away from home against Arsenal.

It is arguably one of the greatest comebacks in Spurs' Premier League history if not their entire history. Arsenal were cruising to a 2-0 win over Spurs, but whatever Harry Redknapp said to his legendary names at half-time did the trick.

The unbelievable Gareth Bale started the comeback just five minutes into the half and then it was the influential Dutchman himself Rafael Van der Vaart who got Tottenham level from the penalty spot after Cesc Fabregas handled a Van der Vaart freekick in the box.

It was all concluded when a former captain (not at the time) Younes Kaboul headed past Lukas Fabianksi, leaving Arsenal stunned in their own backyard.

This was not only a sensational comeback but at the time it stopped Arsenal from going top of the league.

The noise the fans made that day after Kaboul scored the winner will always go down as one the best noises Spurs fans have ever made.

2. Arsenal 4-4 Tottenham Hotspur (29 October 2008, Emirates Stadium)

Just two years before, Spurs had another excellent comeback at the Emirates and it has gone down as one of the best Premier League moments of all time.

In one of the most topsy turvy games in the Premier League, former Gunner David Bentley volleyed home of the greatest volleyed goals you will ever see to give Spurs the lead. His swerving volley leaving Manuel Almunia despairing in the Arsenal goal as he wheeled away in exultation; no problem celebrating against his old side.

It was short-lived as Arsenal took a 3-1 lead with goals from Silvestre, Gallas and Adebayor. Despite Darren Bent reducing the gap, Robin van Persie snuffed out what seemed like any hope given to Spurs fans from Bent within two minutes.

It felt like the same old, same old and that Arsenal would be taking the three points and the bragging rights for weeks around North London. However, Jermaine Jenas curled home a lovely effort with just one minute of normal time to play but it felt like it would be no more than a nervy end for Arsenal.

Yet, the unbelievable player that is Luka Modric wrote himself into Tottenham folklore when he was the man who took a gamble with his shot with just seconds of injury time left and Aaron Lennon was there to slot home the rebound to send the Spurs fans into delirium at the Emirates. Lennon was already adopted as a Spurs native, but with this goal he is brought up before every Derby game for this epic comeback.

3. Arsenal 1-3 Tottenham Hotspur (11th May 1993, Highbury)

This was the first victory for Spurs against Arsenal away from home. It was the only win at Highbury in the Premier League. In a largely forgotten game at the end of the season, it still has a special place in many Spurs fans' memories due to the emphatic nature of the win.

Played out on a Tuesday night, John Hendry made himself a player that Spurs fans will bring up fondly. Scoring the last two goals in the 3-1 win will always make him a great quiz question answer for fans asked about Spurs' record against Arsenal.

Paul Dickov equalised after Teddy Sheringham, a complex figure for Spurs fans, had already opened the scoreline with a powerful header!

A fine day for Spurs fans and one they will be hoping to recreate on 23rd November at the Emirates.
