Spurs coach Thomas Frank organised this extra friendly match at late notice to give minutes to players otherwise lacking game time, such as Wilson Odobert and Richarlison who played no part in our first pre-season game at Reading last week. This match was played behind closed doors at Hotspur Way before the coach and his chosen party left for the (alleged) main attraction of the day at Luton.
Frank chose a strong starting line-up, with the exception of Brandon Austin in goal. Austin will be disappointed in himself regarding Wycombe's equaliser, scored by Guinea-Bissau born winger Junior Quitirna, signed this summer. Wycombe's League One programme begins next Saturday at Bradford. Coach Mike Dodds didn't take many subs to this game and only used two of those.
Luka Vuskovic played right-side centre-back. The 18-year-old certainly has the physique required and plays with a lot of confidence. When Pedro Porro moved forward (which was often the case), Vuskovic, Romero and Davies formed a back three.
Rodrigo Bentancur had fallen ill and at late notice, 19-year-old George Abbott was called in. Abbott had a successful season on loan with Notts County last season and performed capably next to Lucas Bergvall. Pape Sarr moved forward to support the front three of Odobert, Richarlison and Son.
As the game progressed many of the squad travelling to Luton watched the game. James Maddison, Mathys Tel, Brennan Johnson and Guglielmo Vicario were spotted.
Spurs dominated possession with Pedro Porro and Odobert to the fore. Austin was mixing short and long play-out moves and there was no sign of Kamikaze play-out moves.
Skipper Son had the first shot (over the target) after a pass by Odobert before Leahy lifted a shot over the goal from 22 yards, offering no threat. A loose ball fell to Richarlison, who hit a right-footed shot just wide after exchanging with Odobert to his right.
Son was fouled just outside the area towards the left and Pedro Porro's low driven free kick was held by goalkeeper Van Sas. Pedro Porro found Odobert with a good ball down the line. Odobert crossed and Richie's shot was blocked. Spurs took the lead after another Pedro Porro pass; a parried shot from Odobert and a sweeping follow-up by Sarr.
Pedro Porro was on the receiving end of a long pass by Bergvall and won a corner on the right. Richarlison nearly got on the end of a Pedro Porro cross following the corner. Pedro Porro hit a great ball from deep, but Odobert's shot lacked strength.
Out of the blue Wycombe were level. Westergaard was involved in the build-up, but Quitirna was allowed to cut in from the right wing before beating Austin's low dive with a left-footed shot from 22 yards. Wycombe soon won a corner and after a cross from the right, hit a looping header over Austin's bar.
Another Odobert cross beat all and passed through the area. Before the break, Vuskovic moved forward and hit a long shot well over the target.
The half-time break was just ten minutes, and there were no changes at this stage. Wycombe took a surprise lead, and their scorer was Quitirna again. This time he was in the middle and received a pass from Udoh after a play down the left side. Austin was never going to stop Quitirna's powerful finish.
Son showed skill along the goal-line on the left before crossing deep where Pedro Porro's shot hit the top of the bar. Richarlison won a corner after Son's pass and a Pedro Porro cross landed behind the bar.
A poor pass across the midfield led to a chance for Tilley, whose shot looped off Vuskovic for a corner. Now there were substitutions on both sides. Ollie Irow replaced Odobert and Tynan Thompson took over from Richarlison. Son played in the middle and 17-year-old Thompson impressed on the left.
After a short pass by Romero, Sarr had an exchange with Thompson and after the return, Sarr fired home. Son had a right-footed curler saved after Thompson had cut the ball back from the left.
There were numerous substitutions, and no senior Spurs players remained for the last fifteen minutes. The youngsters did well, and Tynan Thompson hit a left-footed shot just wide across the goal. Williams-Barnett was fouled on the edge of the box, and subsequently had a decent shot blocked.
