The sun was slowly setting over the Stretford End stand at kick-off, and when Bryan Mbeumo gave United a 73rd minute lead in front of that stand, Spurs' hopes of getting off the bottom of the table looked hopeless.

Spurs had been all over United in the first half but had failed to convert the chances that should have given them a three-goal lead. There had been no shortage of effort throughout the game, but an excess of passion led to substitute Rodrigo Bentancur seeing red in the 78th minute.

Spurs faced an uphill battle, but the ten men played like eleven and scored a dramatic and deserved equaliser in the 92nd minute. The goal was scored by Solanke (his first Premier League goal since March) who captained the side for the first time.

The point has lifted Spurs off the bottom. They will host fellow strugglers Coventry a week on Monday.

Both sides desperately needed a win to kick start their season. Michael Carrick's United have made their worst start for 40 years. Spurs know all about bad starts, but now have three points after six games, which is an improvement on 2008.

Roberto de Zerbi made six changes with Pedro Porro, Van de Ven, Robertson, Bentancur, Fernandes, and Marmoush replaced by Gray, Senesi, Udogie, Gallagher, Bergvall and Kudus, respectively. Pedro Porro is still recovering from his injury. Andy Robertson was rested and Micky van de Ven was one of the four replaced players who did come off a strong bench. Mohammed Kudus was making his first league start since January.

Carrick made two changes with Amad Diallo making his first appearance of the season (in favour of Rashford) and Leny Yoro replacing Dalot at right back.

The coolness of Autumn has finally arrived. Spurs kicked off and played towards the Stretford End. An early home chant refereed to the (alleged) "cheats" of Manchester City.

Spurs had a golden opportunity to take the lead after only two minutes. Goalkeeper Lammens' poor play-out ball was intercepted by Lucas Bergvall who fed the ball to Solanke, who had the goal beckoning. Dom's first effort was saved at a stretch by Lammens, and a second effort was cleared. It should have been 1-0.

Conor Gallagher suffered an early booking when he halted an advance by Maguire. Spurs were playing bright football. United were making too many risky and errant passes. Savio was giving Yoro a hard time, while Kudus and Bergvall made headway down the right wing. Yoro did make a good saving tackle inside his box on Van Hecke who took several chances to advance. Indeed, Spurs spent a lot of time in the United half.

Conor Gallagher passed to Savio who ran the ball out of play and should have done better. He and Kudus looked very sharp. A shot by Bergvall passed wide when he should have hit the target.

Spurs were passing quickly and sharply, although not all of the passes were successful. United offered danger on the break and a dangerous cross by Mbeumo was cleared.

After a great move down the left featuring Tonali, Udogie and finally Savio, Kudus fired wide when he too should have scored. One was left feeling we would rue those missed chances.

United at last got a foot in the game after about half an hour and the disappointed home crowd urged them on.

Udogie fed the ball to Savio, whose cross was headed out for a corner. After the corner, Tonali's shot was blocked and bounced off Mbeumo who successfully chased the ball up the pitch to break clear. He passed to Diallo, whose shot was held by Kinsky, who hadn't been tested until that moment.

Solanke passed inside to Gallagher who had advanced to an excellent position inside the box but just couldn't find his feet to hit a proper shot. That could have been a fourth goal!

United were booed off at half-time. They kicked off after the break and Van Hecke soon put a dangerous ball by Shaw out for a corner. Tonali fed Savio who crossed towards Kudus, but Shaw cleared this too. Solanke hit another Savio cross high over the bar.

United had the ball in the net, but the ball had already gone out of play before being crossed. Archie Gray had defended well there. Savio made a good run through the middle, but his efforts desperately needed a pass, whereas he lost possession. He did have a shot deflected out for a corner, after Gallagher's pass. We had two corners, but not a goal.

Carrick's first substitutions were Dalot for Yoro, new signing Baleba for Tielemans, and Zirkzee for Diallo. Zirkzee had an effort blocked after a Fernandes free kick. After a corner, Baleba fired over the target. At the other end, Udogie put a shot wide, but knew he was offside.

Spurs now replaced Bergvall with Bentancur and Kudus with Marmoush. Savio switched to the right wing. A Savio shot was blocked by Mainoo.

That feared goal for the home side came in the 73rd minute. Cunha got ahead of Gray and crossed from the left. Mbeumo scored a clever goal with a left foot shot across goal and into the far corner, just beating Kinsky's out-stretched hand. Spurs' centre-backs had been playing well until this point, but Van Hecke was just caught out here.

United fans chanted "You're going down with the City." De Zerbi put on Maddison for Gallagher and Van de Ven for Udogie, although Solanke kept the armband. Micky initially played at left back, as he does for his country.

Spurs' woes increased when a melee broke out after Bentancur's challenge on Shaw. This had immediately followed a similar challenge by Van Hecke on Ferdinand. The red mist came down as Shaw shoved Bentancur to the ground and Bentancur stood with his head down and into Shaw. Shaw of course feigned injury and went to the ground. This led to a melee, after which referee Stuart Attwell showed Bentancur the red card. He will miss our next three games.

Passions rose and more yellow cards followed. Mbeumo was too fast for Senesi, but Kinsky saved well. Senesi was replaced by Mateus Fernandes and now Micky became one of a Spurs back three as the ten men took the gamed to United.

A shot by Dalot was blocked by Van Hecke. Spurs' efforts were rewarded when Tonali chipped a cross into the middle off the area where Solanke just got the better of Martinez and got his head to the ball to beat Lammens. The celebrations were immense. United heads went down.

Kinsky had another save to make, this time from a Harry Maguire shot from 20 yards.

Carrick made two more substitutions including Rashford for Cunha. Baleba had late shot go high over the bar, and Spurs had a deserved morale-boosting point. United fans jeered their team again.

Our return could, and should, have been so much better, but in the circumstances the point gained was excellent.
