Kick-start win required

Spurs host Aston Villa in tomorrow's lunchtime game, being televised by TNT Spots here in the UK. Both teams are in the bottom four and seek a first Premier League win to kick-start their season. Villa had a morale-boosting 3-1 Carabao Cup win at Coventry on Wednesday night. Spurs failed at Anfield, but did at least score a goal to add to the five they scored against Charlton in the second round. Villa also gained a Champions League win in Bruges last week.

Whoever loses this game faces the ignominy of being in the bottom four with five games played, and for the duration of the three-week international break.

Both clubs are in transition. Spurs made many purchases, who have yet to gel. Europa League winners Villa have seen twice as many immediate player departures from a team that had just won a continental final as any previous English club in European history. Ollie Watkins (Al-Hilal) became the sixth member of the XI that started the Europa League final against Freiburg to leave Villa Park, joining Emi Martinez (Chelsea), Ezri Konsa (Arsenal), Lucas Digne (PSG), Youri Tielemans (Man Utd) and Morgan Rogers (also Chelsea).

Villa were one of three teams to reach a European final last season. Villa had already secured a Champions League place before they beat Freiburg 3-0 in May's final to win their first European trophy in 44 years. Unai Emery was not new to this phenomena as he has now won the trophy five times as a manager/coach (3 times with Sevilla and once with Villarreal). No manager has won more major European finals. It was Villa's first trophy for 30 years since a League Cup Final win in 1996.

Last season, Villa failed to score in their first four league games and were in the bottom three until they won their sixth Premier League game. Their win at Tottenham on 19th October was their third successive league win before they also beat Manchester City 1-0 at home. Villa beat City on the last day of the season to complete a memorable league double.

Villa paid Wolves £35 million for midfielder Joao Gomes in summer. Gomes had a disastrous league debut for his new club at Brighton when Villa lost 4-0 on the opening weekend. He was culpable for one of Brighton's goals before being sent off for violent conduct. Thus he has missed Villa's last three games (and the Coventry league cup game with a calf injury), but is hoping to be fit tomorrow.

Other Villa acquisitions include striker Nicolas Jackson and forward Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea. Garnacho is on loan, as is Aaron Wan-Bissaka from West Ham. Both Garnacho and Wan-Bissaka formerly played for Manchester United, of course.

Villa and Chelsea are known to have a close relationship. They were also involved in a deal widely described as a "PSR swap", which saw defender Ian Maatsen join Villa and Omari Kellyman, now at Strasbourg, move to Chelsea.

Villa have also signed goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma, and left-back Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico. Additional arrivals include midfielder Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for a club record fee of just over £50m, and former Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka on a free transfer.

Finally, Villa have completed the signings of Senegal winger Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris St-Germain and English centre-back Taylor Harwood Bellis from Southampton.

17-year-old Brian Madjo (6ft 4ins/194cm tall!)became the youngest player to score in the UEFA Super Cup when Villa lost 2-1 to PSG (Spurs took the French side to penalties last year). Madjo was born in Enfield, but has Luxembourg nationality. Villa signed Madjo from Metz in January for £10 million. He made his senior debut against PSG.

Madjo played three games for Luxembourg in 2025, but changed allegiance with UEFA and decided he would represent England instead, with FIFA rules allowing players who had up to three international caps prior to the age of 21 to change allegiance.

Midfielder Amadou Onana suffered an ACL rupture in July, when playing for Belgium in the World Cup, and will be out for another 5-6 months at least. Other injured absentees for Villa include Goretzka, Maatsen, Madjo and Pau Torres,

Villa were one of four English clubs who were fined this summer by UEFA for breaches of financial rules for the period ending in 2025. The others were Chelsea, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.

Of course, we Spurs fans are hoping for that elusive win to be ours, and I will opt for a scoreline of 2-1.

10 years ago, on September 18th, in our fifth Premier League game of the season, we beat Sunderland 1-0, thanks to a Harry Kane goal.

Jimmy Rimmer, who died aged 78 last month played every game in Villa's league title win in the 1980-81 season. The following year he excelled in Europe. Sadly, in the 1982 final, a neck injury forced him off the pitch in the ninth minute. Nigel Spink took over in goal, and was a hero for the winning Villa side.

Rimmer also played for Manchester United and Arsenal. He was the non-playing substitute in United's historic 1968 European Cup win.

Sam Barrott referees us for the seventh time. A good omen is the fact that his last Spurs game was our vital away win against Villa in May. That win, with three games to play, put our fate in our own hands. Villa had their Europa League semi-final decider against Nottingham Forest on their minds. Mr. Barrott has already refereed three Europa Conference League qualifiers this season.
