The following information about FC Kaiserlautern has been supplied by
Günter Minnerup, a contact of mine on CiX.
1.FC Kaiserslautern are known as the "Red Devils" for their all-red strip
and visits to their Betzenberg stadium are probably the most feared away
fixtures because of the highly intimidating atmosphere created by the
compact, English-style ground and their extremely boisterous crowd. The
FCK first came to national prominence in 1954, when they won the German
championship and provided several of West Germany's World Cup winning team
that year, above all Fritz Walter who has an iconic status in Germany
similar to Stan Matthews in England.
The 1960s and 1970s were lean years but Kaiserslautern returned to the top
with a vengeance in the 1980s, winning another league title and the cup.
Three years ago, they were relegated as cup winners only to return at the
first attempt and becoming the first newly-promoted club to win the
Bundesliga under their charismatic coach Otto Rehhagel, previously
successful with Werder Bremen and Bayern Munich. They reached the quarter
finals of the Champions League last year, being knocked out by Bayern
Munich, and finished sixth in the Bundesliga.
Their playing style is very "English", always attacking on the flanks with
crosses aimed at their tall striker, Olaf Marschall. Other danger men are
the Brazilian wing-half Ratinho, the Swiss team captain and midfield
organiser Ciriaco Sforza (who had a season at Inter Milan), the powerful
attacking full-back Martin Wagner, and of course newly-signed French World
Cup star Youri Djorkaeff partnering Marschall up front.
According to the latest edition of the Rothmans Football Yearbook,
Kaiserlautern have won the Bundesliga 4 times since the League was formed
in 1903. They have won the German FA Cup on two occasions since the Cup
started in 1935.
Since Spurs began competing in Europe in the 1960s, they have played clubs
from Germany on the following occasions :
06.03.74 1FC Cologne [UEFA Cup QF 1st Leg] A 2-1
20.03.74 1FC Cologne [UEFA Cup QF 2nd Leg] H 3-0
10.04.74 Lokomotiv Leipzig [UEFA Cup SF 1st Leg] A 2-1
24.04.74 Lokomotiv Leipzig [UEFA Cup SF 2nd Leg] H 2-0
03.03.82 Eintracht Frankfurt [ECWC Round 3 1st Leg] H 2-0
17.03.82 Eintracht Frankfurt [ECWC Round 3 2nd Leg] A 1-2
20.10.82 Bayern Munich [ECWC Round 2 1st Leg] H 1-1
03.11.82 Bayern Munich [ECWC Round 2 2nd Leg] A 1-4
23.11.83 Bayern Munich [UEFA Cup Round 3 1st Leg] A 0-1
07.12.83 Bayern Munich [UEFA Cup Round 3 2nd Leg] H 2-0
As you can see, we have generally been successful against clubs from
Germany. Only Bayern Munich have beaten us over two legs but that was a
pretty efficient German team : the teams for that tie were as follows:
FIRST LEG :
Tottenham Hotspur : Clemence; Price, Miller, Lacy, O'Reilly (sub Gibson);
Hazard, Brooke, Villa, Mabbutt; Archibald (sub Falco), Crooks.
Bayern Munich : Pfaff; Martin, Augenthaler, Grobe, Horsmann, Dremmler,
Krauss, Breitner, Dürnberger, Hoeness, Rummeneigge.
Goalscorers : Archibald [TH]; Breitner [BM]
Attendance : 36,488.
SECOND LEG :
Bayern Munich : Pfaff; Augenthaler, Dremmler, Grobe, Horsmann, Krauss,
Breitner, Dürnberger, Del'Haye, Hoeness, Rummeneigge.
Tottenham Hotspur : Clemence; Hughton, Price, Miller [sub Perryman], Lacy;
Hazard, Mabbutt, Brooke [sub Hoddle], Villa; Archibald, Crooks.
Goalscorers : Hoeness, Horsmann, Breitner, Rummeneigge [BM]; Hughton [TH]
Attendance : 50,000.
There is no doubt in my mind that Bayern Munich side was a very special
one. Rummeneigge, Breitner and Hoeness were the stars of that team.
Unfortunately for us, we were caught in the middle of an injury crisis as
can be noted by the absence of Hoddle and Perryman from the home leg of
the tie and their return as substitutes when the tie had been lost.
Looking ahead to tomorrow night, I envisage a very close contest. We
*MUST* win at least 2-0 to stand any chance of surviving the second leg
next week. Kaiserlautern are no mugs and we will face a very difficult
battle. Much will depend on who scores first. If Tottenham can nick an
early goal, it might settle some nerves. I will be watching the game on
Sky Sports News as I have now upgraded to Sky Digital.
COME ON YOU SPURS!
Cheers, Brian
