The Double Years

FIFTY YEARS AFTER

The Double Series was written by the eminent Brian Judson

"Sir" Bill Nicholson - The Rock upon which Tottenham Hotspur Football Club was built

I have today (Sat 23rd October 2004) received the news of the passing of the greatest man in Spurs History with deep, deep regret. I can find no words to describe "Sir Bill" better than those of Daniel Levy in the programme for the recent induction of Bill into the Spurs Hall of Fame. Bill Nicholson was the Rock upon which Tottenham Hotspur, as we know it today, was built. He will always be revered in that fashion. The World, Football, and Tottenham Hotspur have lost a great man indeed.

Most of all, of course, we must express our heart-felt condolences to Bill's loving wife Darkie, all his family, contemporaries, and those players who had the honour of playing for Bill, expecially those surviving members of the Double Team who were installed into the Spurs Hall of Fame in March this year.

Bill Nicholson has been a part of Tottenham Hotspur since he was signed as a player way back in 1938. His loyalty to one club through thick and thin has known no bounds. "Sir" Bill's benign, smiling, spiritual presence will shine over all at Tottenham for evermore.

God Bless "Mr Tottenham". I shall miss him dearly. I feel like I have lost a dear member of my family.
