On This Matchday

Saturday 11th September, 1982
Spurs 1 Manchester City 2

Looking back through some of the programmes from this season, the content was somewhat disappointing, as the club decided to take a wider view of football affairs, and gave many pages to matters concerning other clubs. In this match programme for example, there were articles on Steve Norman of Spandau Ballet, Emlyn Hughes, who was player-manager at Rotherham, Paolo Rossi of the World Cup winning Italy team, and a double page spread on Norwich City. It was difficult to find any decent Spurs content and news!

The result was also a disappointment, as after beating Southampton 6-0, Spurs went down to a Manchester City side managed by John Bond. I don't have the details of the team that played, but the published names were Williams; Ranson, McDonald, Baker, Bond, Caton, Hareide, Reeves, Cross, Hartford and Power. Spurs played Clemence; Mabbutt, Price, Lacy, Perryman; Brooke, Hazard, Villa, Galvin; Archibald and Crooks. Graham Roberts replaced Micky Hazard, and Gary Mabbutt scored the home goal in front of a crowd of 32,483. Glen Hoddle had been injured in that Southampton game.

Spurs were still celebrating their centenary year, and were proud of their "new" West Stand.

Archibald in front of the famous shelf!

There was a nice picture of Steve Archibald trying an overhead kick against Luton, with the famous shelf in the background, and a full page advert for the forthcoming Cup Winners Cup game against Coleraine. Mike Varney had a full page article on coaching.

One sad piece of news reported was the passing of Ken Barton who was a member of the Double winning squad, and who features in Brian Judson's excellent series. Ken Barton lived in Chester and combined an executive position in the pharmaceutical trade, with a broadcasting role for BBC Wales. The programme reported that he had worked on the semi-final victory against Leicester earlier that year.

Other results on this day include:-

65-66	H v Arsenal D 2-2
71-72	A v Sheff Utd D 2-2
74-75	H v Middlesbrough L 0-4 (League Cup)
76-77	H v Leeds W 1-0
93-94	A v Sheff Utd D 2-2
