19th August, 1970
Tottenham Hotspur 0 Leeds United 2
On Wednesday 19th August, 1970, we played our second game of
the season at home to Don Revie's mighty Leeds side. Having drawn
the first game (also at home) 2-2 against West Ham in front of 53,640,
a better result was desired, but unfortunately we went down 2-0
in front of "just" 39,927.
The programme price was One shilling (5 new pence), for which
you got 16 pages of news and features.
I intend to feature the next match which was away to Wolves,
and from that programme I have culled the ground and seat prices
for the lane. Ground price was 6 shillings ("Boys" 3
shillings - note the assumption that this was not a girl's game!).
There was a 2 shilling fee for Transfer to the Enclosure.
Reserved seats were 15 shillings, and unreserved 12 shillings. (One
shilling = 5p)
Leeds, having won the Championship in 68-69 came to us as
reigning runners-up, and of course, in those days would have to
settle for the UEFA Cup, unlike the runners-up of today! Leeds
would finish runners-up again "this season". They had
started with a 1-0 win at Old Trafford, where Manchester United
were clearly becoming less than invincible two years after their
European Cup victory.
The published side for Leeds would be easy to guess for those
relatively long in the tooth like me! Sprake; Madeley, Charlton,
Hunter,Cooper; Lorimer, Bremner, Giles, Gray; Clarke and Jones.
As I recall, Madeley was the utility man, and would have been
covering for Paul Reaney on that day. He often covered the centre
back position as well.
Spurs played as follows:- Jennings; Evans, England, Collins,
Knowles; Pearce, Mullery, Perryman, Peters ; Gilzean, Chivers.
There was a picture in the programme from the 2-0 victory in
the friendly against Glasgow Rangers, and a feature on Pat
Jennings (picture on web site).
The referee was John Hunting.
Despite gaining only 1 point from our first two games, we did
finish third in the league that season, but 12 points behind
Leeds, who got 64 points. I shan't mention the team that won the
title! It is interesting to note that our 42 game league
programme started on 15th August, and was scheduled to be
completed on 1st May, and yes, there were two cup competitions in
those days!
