Brentford must be one of the unluckiest clubs in the Greater London area. They were just beginning to establish themselves as one of the bigger London clubs just before the war. They finished 5th, 6th and 6th in 1935-36, 1936-37 and 1937-38 respectively in Division 1. The outbreak of war in September 1939 ruined their aspirations and after the war they had a side too old to fight for their place in the old Division 1. They tried their best but could only attain a meagre 25 points (only Leeds with 18 had fewer) and Brentford finished nine points from safety.

Before being promoted to Division 1 at the end of season 1934-35 (when we made the reverse journey to Division 2), Brentford had enjoyed a great deal of success. They had done well in the old Southern League Division 1, which defected to form the Third Division (South) at the start of 1920-21. Brentford won all 21 home games in their Division 3 (South) campaign of 1929-30, the only club who can make that boast.

Back in Division 2 at the start of the 1947-48 campaign, Brentford slowly declined over the next few years until they were relegated to Division 3 (South) at the end of 1953-54. Since then, they have spent much of their time yo-yoing between the middle and bottom layer of the Football League. But they did manage to climb back to the (new) First Division a few seasons ago but they are now back in the basement.

Brentford are currently unusual in that their owner, Ron Noades, the former Crystal Palace owner, is also their team manager. Perhaps we ought to ask Alan Sugar to see if he can find us a winning team as none of our recent managers seems to have done so? :-)

And how do I think Spurs will fare against Brentford? I think they may well lose the first leg of the cup tie given that I've heard Spurs have returned unsold tickets to Brentford. I guess a lot of the travelling support won't be there. But we ought to beat them over two legs surely. If not, the whole squad will deserve to be taken out and shot if they fail to beat Brentford.

Cheers, Brian
