This match, as early as August, is being billed as a relegation six-pointer. Both clubs have made poor starts to the season. Both have very impatient sets of fans who expect miracles. Both have comparatively new managers. Everton appointed Walter Smith and Archie Knox as their manager and assistant manager during the summer. Everyone should be aware of what they achieved at Glasgow Rangers.

The equivalent fixture last season saw Spurs unexpectedly win 2-0 at Goodison Park. It was unexpected because Spurs were playing so poorly and were so drained of confidence that it was difficult to see where their next win was coming from. Clive Wilson cleared a shot off our goal line in the 1st minute. Nicky Barmby saw a shot rebound from our crossbar. In the second half, Ramon Vega got on to the end of an Andy Sinton cross to head us ahead in the 72nd minute. Six minutes later, Ginola volleyed the ball past Neville Southall.

This fixture is a crucial one for Tottenham. If Tottenham can win this match, they may acquire some confidence to believe in themselves. I have said on several occasions that, although the squad is not my preferred one, it is not as bad as some of us have said it is. Confidence helps players to play above their abilities sometimes. For instance, in the Double side of 1960-61, Baker, Henry and Dyson were no more than average players in ability but because they were given the confidence to believe in themselves, they consistently played above their abilities so much that Ron Henry even gained an England cap, albeit two years later.

Cheers, Brian
