Spurs have also met Northampton Town in the FA Cup in 1924-25. We beat
them 3-0 through goals by Jack Elkes, Jimmy Seed and Alec Lindsay. Spurs
have never played Northampton before in the Football League Cup.
Spurs did play Northampton in Southern League days, though.
For those of us who were around in the Sixties, there will be many of us
who will remember Northampton's fairy tale climb to the old First
Division and then their descent back to where they came from. They were
runners-up in the old Second Division to Newcastle United in 1965-66, the
Toon pinching the title by only one point.
But then Northampton discovered the sheer size of their problem. Their
ground could not cope with the number of fans who wanted to see their
matches and they found they could not cope with the huge difference in
class. It took them a long time to come to grips with playing in the
First Division which made them favourites for the drop from an early
stage. Tottenham won at Northampton in the November 1965. Greaves was
missing from the side, ill with hepatitis B. Mackay and Saul, two of the
survivors from the Double squad, scored the goals that beat Northampton
that day. For the return game, Greaves was back and managed to continue
his sequence of scoring at least one goal against every team he played
against in club colours. But it does have to be said that it was from
the penalty spot and that Tottenham were fortunate to grab a draw that
day.
Surprisingly, it was not Northampton who were bottom at the end of the
season but Blackburn Rovers, who pre-season had been disrupted by an
outbreak of polio in the town and they were always a couple of fixtures
behind everyone else for most of the season.
In recent seasons, Northampton have been almost on the point of
extinction, which they have now overcome. They have also been close to
being relegated to the Conference. But, currently, they are doing well
and have climbed into the Second Division, where they are trying to climb
above the relegation battle. Last season, Dozzell was playing for them
but they did not renew his contract.
On the face of it, Spurs ought to beat Northampton but, as we all know,
it will not be as simple as that. On their compact ground, Northampton
might well win. Given that Graham needs to sort out Tottenham, I would
not shed too many tears if we lost this one. But, as it happens, I think
we will win, 3-1.
Cheers, Brian
