David Pleat this week finally admitted that Spurs are involved in the end of season relegation scrap. I feel that he and the rest of the powers that be at White Hart Lane have held a blinkered view about Spurs' Premiership status for too long. How else can we explain the fact that Spurs are bottom of the current 6 game form table, having managed just one point from those matches?
It does look like we are going to be grateful for that New Year run, and the arrival of Jermain Defoe with his four goals in his first three games for Spurs survival. As I said last week, I discount the chances of Wolves and Leicester, both of whom need 10 points from their last 4 games to get level with Spurs. Wolves effectively need 12 points, as their goal difference will remain far inferior to that of Spurs, although Leicester could feasibly improve their goal difference to match that of Spurs. However, their last game is at Highbury.
Next week, we must be Portsmouth fans, as they meet Leeds at Elland Road. IF Pompey can beat Leeds, then I reckon we could be safe without one more point, as that would leave Leeds needing 7 points from 3 games, including Chelsea away. If Leeds get a result, then we do have to sweat out the final weeks and pray for something from the Blackburn and/or Wolves games, because as sure as eggs is eggs, we ain't taking anything off the Gooners next week (I suggest blindfolds for home fans), and Villa will be too strong for us in two weeks time.
It does not look as if there will be any pride in our maintaining Premiership status, but I still think we will stay up. Blackburn, Portsmouth and Man City may all finish above us, but at the end of the day the Leeds part of the equation is all we need to monitor. Sadly, the club's finances are going to take a hell of a knock, as every place in the Premiership that is lost costs about half a million smackers. This is turning into a season worse even than '97-'98, when at least Spurs did finish the season in some style.
