Spurs Odyssey Reviews the Premiership Season for 2005-2006 - Match 2
|
Do you remember I told you in the Middlesbrough match report about the similarities between yesterday's goals and even goal times? Well here's another spooky statistic. Read the Middlesbrough preview again and you will see that when we beat Middlesbrough 2-0 last year, Arsenal lost on the same week-end for the first time in two years. This week-end is the first time it has happened since 28th November last year. Let's hope this is an event that re-occurs more often this season!
Further to the Middlesbrough match report, when Spurs had that two-match winning start in 94-95, they went on to their highest Premiership finish to date. There's a record we want to at least emulate. Well, in fact we need to beat it to attain European football!
It may come as a surprise to know that there are only two other occasions when Spurs have had such a winning start to their season, since their record breaking sequence of 11 wins at the start of the Double season. In 65-66 we beat Leicester 4-2 and Blackpool 4-0, which were both home matches. Then, in 1972-3 we beat Coventry at home 2-1, and West Brom 1-0 away. We have not won the first three games since the famous Double Year of 1960-61. Bring on Blackburn!
Man Utd, Liverpool, Charlton and Wigan will sit the midweek fixtures out, due to the Champions League Qualifiers, but with Arsenal at home to Fulham and Chelsea at home to West Brom, Spurs will need that third consecutive win to maintain their supremacy at the top of the League, and gloating rights, before the big one next Saturday at home to Abramovich's playthings.
