Truly, it was a smashing week-end for Spurs fans, who enjoyed the perfect Sunday, after doing the business against Manchester City on Saturday lunch-time.
Firstly, a Bolton side that showed plenty of resistance, and had some decent chances, succumbed to a Robbie Fowler goal at Anfield, and then, those of us that could watch the evening game at Old Trafford cheered wayne Rooney's goal, and sat back with smug grins on their faces after the Red Devils' lead was doubled when that man Rooney laid on Park's finish.
That wonderful week-end was capped by a marvellous result for us at Fratton Park tonight (Wednesday 12th April), when Lua-Lua equalised an Henry goal to give Pompey a fighting chance of survival, and to enhance Spurs' chances of Champions League qualification. The Spurs connection of Sean Davis, Pedro Mendes and substitute Wayne Routledge all had a say in proceedings, with Mendes being the most impressive for nearly scoring yet again from 25 yards.
With a big week-end coming up, and the continuing tension of the run-in, my friend David Kingsley has calculated the following "Magic Numbers", which indicate the situation(s) needed for the various qualifications open to Spurs:-
The magic number is the amount of points needed by Spurs (and/or
dropped by other teams) to get to the following positions:
For 4th place (CL-hopefully!): 12 points (the number of points Spurs
need to win and/or Arsenal need to lose)
For 5th place (UEFA cup): 12 points (the number of points Spurs need
to win and/or Blackburn need to lose)
For 6th place (UEFA cup): 9 points (the number of points Spurs need to
win and/or Bolton need to lose)
So - if Spurs win at Goodison, and Bolton lose at home to Chelsea, then we would need just three more points to be sure of a UEFA Cup place. Let's say Arsenal only draw at Pompey. That would leave us needing 12 points to be sure of staying above them - but don't forget Blackburn are still in the race. The challenge for Spurs to stay fourth or even fifth is very tough indeed, when you consider the games we have to come. We can only take it one game at a time!
This page has been updated after the Pompey game, and the above calculations suitably adjusted. I'll try and keep you updated for the rest of the run-in. Let's just say that the game on April 22nnd looks like being our biggest for several years!
