Whilst we wait with baited breath for this Saturday's humdinger of a Derby at Highbury (preview on this site tomorrow), Spurs' situation improved again as a result of Bolton's draw at West Brom - thanks to a Kevin Nolan last minute miss - and Blackburn's loss at Birmingham.
It is now virtually a certainty that we are in Europe as Bolton have to win all their games by an average of 2 1/2 goals and we have to lose all three by an average of 2 1/2 goals for them to overtake us.
The magic number is the combination of points needed by Spurs (and/or dropped by their closest league rivals) to get to the following positions:
For 4th place (CL): 9 points (the number of points Spurs need to win
and/or Arsenal need to lose)Note that because the two teams meet on Saturday, then IF Spurs win this equation reduces by 6 points, and Spurs would need to win just one of their two remaining games to be assured of 4th place. A draw would leave us needing to win both games (Bolton (H) and West Ham (A)).
For 5th place (UEFA cup): 3 points (the number of points Spurs need to
win and/or Blackburn need to lose)
For 6th place (UEFA cup): 1 point (the number of points Spurs need to
win and/or Bolton need to lose)
Spurs just need to gain and/or Bolton need to lose 1 point to GUARANTEE European football next season!! Note that Bolton could finish above Blackburn, and that Newcastle, Wigan, West Ham and even Charlton could finish in 6th place (in theory).
Let me just say that my passport renewal has been submitted.
COME ON YOU SPURS!
