After Match 4 of the Premiership programme, some statistics are still intact. Chelsea have not conceded a goal, but neither have Man Utd, who also have a 100% record, but have played one game less (that's a postponed game at home to Wigan!). Charlton have made their best ever start in the top flight, and also have a 100% record to savour. Two of their players, Luke Young and Darren Bent have been rewarded with places in Sven Goran Eriksson's England squad for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers. Spurs' Paul Robinson, Michael Carrick and Jermain Defoe are also in the squad.
Newcastle still seek their first goal of the season, whilst that losing run of Sunderland's (19 consecutive Premiership games)goes on. Their next game is at Chelsea! That'll be 20 defeats then!
Other items of note this week-end were Wigan's first Premiership win, with the fastest goal (a penalty) of the day, Milan Baros's debut goal for Aston Villa, and Andy Cole's continuing form for Man City - still above their rivals and Cole's ex-team in the table.
Spurs fans are still bitter about Rob Styles' influence on the game, and I have been amazed at the strength of support he has received from many in the press, who never take long to get onto Spurs backs. Rumour has it that Styles is a Chelsea fan (born in Hampshire), but we just have to hope that Mido's appeal against the red card (confirmed today) will be successful. Dirk Kuyt has said he is staying at Feyenoord, and unless Daniel Levy comes up with a trump card in the next two days, the sale of Fredi Kanoute is beginning to look as if it was premature.
Next up for Spurs on September 10th is a home game against Liverpool, but in the meantime, here are a couple more references to remind oursleves of why Mr Styles is not welcome at our games!
· Newcastle 1 Spurs 0 - 13.03.05
We lost 1-0 to Newcastle in the F.A Cup 6th Rd, and I said this about Rob Styles - "Rob Styles (not the best friend of Spurs fans) failed to see a Bowyer handball in the area in injury time, did see another hand ball by Bowyer in the box, but decided it was ball to hand, and also disallowed a Keane goal, after spotting a foul from Gardner’s innocuous challenge to head down a corner with two minutes of normal time left."
· Leeds 2 Spurs 2 - 12.04.03
2-2 at Elland Road:- "Not for the first time this season, the result of a Spurs game swung on a tale of two penalties in the second half. One that was given (against Kasey Keller for a reckless foul on Kewell), and a last minute chance for Simon Davies, who looked to have been brought down clearly in the last minute in front of the baying away support by Radebe. Referee Rob Styles was having none of the Davies appeal though, but did not book the Spurs player for diving, which seems perverse as presumably he must have decided he was cheating."
