Spurs Odyssey Reviews the Premiership Season for 2005-2006 - Match 8
|
By my reckoning, Spurs are in their highest league position after 8 games for 15 years, since it was the 1990-91 season, when we last held that lofty position after the same number of games. The last time we were above Arsenal after the same period was as long ago as the 1994-95 season. Let's hope we can continue this trend, although the gooners scored a somewhat fortuitous goal to get all three points off a valiant Brummie side.
As mentioned in the match report yesterday, Spurs made their best come back since April 14th 2001, when a Stephen Clemence goal and two from Gary Doherty gave Spurs the points at Sunderland. In the same season, we also came back against Charlton in the FA cup on February 7th to win 4-2 after being two down. Earlier that season (September 5th 2000), Sergei Rebrov (2), and Les Ferdinand scored the goals that gave us a 3-2 at home to Everton.Check this page if you want to examine the archive reports from that season. Everton of course are our next opponents at The Lane on October 15th, and are still rooted to the bottom, thanks to Danny Mills first goal for three years, and an injury time killer from Vassell.
Thanks to Wigan for maintaining their great start, keeping Bolton below us.
It is definitely looking like a fight for second, third and fourth places already, as Chelsea threaten our own wonderful 11 match winning start in the 1960-61 Double season, with a scoreline that no-one surely would have predicted. It's Liverpool's worst Premiership start for 13 years, and the first time they have conceded 4 league goals since 1969! (apparently). Let's hope Spurs can stay involved in the top four race!
