With thanks to Declan Mulcahy for his input - and to a couple of correspondents for their corrrections!
Once again the "Spursometer" has been adjusted to account for the grades given by 112 contributors, rather than the abitrary offerings of the webmaster! It is nice to know that the overall team grades and the award of man of the match to Jermain Defoe are not significantly different from those arbitrary grades, upon which the "Spursometer" has been based for some 9 years now.
There were only 6 Premier League games played mid-week, due to the European commitments of some teams, but it must be a record to report that there have been no draws as yet, with 16 games played in the season.
We are only two games into the season, but in terms of best starts, some of the press were reporting that we have had our best start for 44 years since 1965. In terms of goal difference, that is correct, after we then beat Leicester 4-2, and Blackpool 4-0, but in recent seasons (2005-06, and 1994-95) we also won our first two games. Let's hope the winning form continues, especially with West Ham coming up on Sunday!
Spurs last scored precisely 5 goals away from home in a league game in the 1988-89 season. This was at Millwall on 29th April, when Walsh, Stewart (3), and Samways scored. Many thanks to Tom Taylor for putting me right on that! Previously we scored 5 in the 1985-86 season at QPR on 26th April, when Mark Falco and Clive Allen each scored a brace, and Glenn Hoddle also scored. Incidentally, in their last two games that season, Spurs beat Aston Villa 4-2, and Southampton 5-3 at home.
Spurs best previous away league win was on 2nd May, 1998 at Selhurst Park, when we famously beat Wimbledon 6-2 to ensure survival in the Premier League with one game of the season remaining.
More recently, Spurs have scored 5 or more goals in away League Cup games. Defoe and Keane were also on the score-sheet on 25th October, 2006, when we beat MK Dons 5-0 at The National Hockey Stadium.
On 22nd September, 2004, we beat Oldham 6-0 at Boundary Park, with goals from kanoute (2), Keane, Defoe, Bunjevcevic, and Anthony Gardner, who was on the receiving end this week at Hull.
Jermain Defoe crops up in these games and needs just one more league goal to hit the 50 mark for Spurs and 6 more for his 100th Premier League goal. Jermain's last hat-trick was on 18th December, 2004, against Southampton (managed by Harry Redknapp!), when Spurs won 5-1. The other scorers were Keane and Kanoute.
Spurs have now won 4 of their last 6 league games (W-D-W-L-W-W)
