Comparing away win records
Mention was made after our 3-1 win at The Liberty Stadium on Sunday of the fact we had not won five consecutive away league games for 54 years.
The story is told in most excellent detail in Brian Judson's series of articles about the Spurs Double Season. The modern day Spurs side has a long way to go yet, before they emulate the winning record of no less than 10 consecutive away league games by the Spurs side of 1960.
Spurs won their first 8 away games of the Double season, and had won their last two away games of the 1959-60 season. The full list is here, sandwiched by the defeats before and after the run:-
09.04.60 L Everton 1-2
15.04.60 W Chelsea 3-1
23.04.60 W Wolves 3-1
22.08.60 W Blackpool 3-1
27.08.60 W Blackburn 4-1
07.09.60 W Bolton 2-1
10.09.60 W Arsenal 3-2
17.09.60 W Leicester 2-1
01.10.60 W Wolves 4-0
15.10.60 W Nottm. Forest 4-0
29.10.60 W Newcastle 4-3
02.11.60 L Sheff. Wed. 1-2
That 10 game run was a Division One record. Chelsea managed 9 consecutive away wins in the Premier League in the 2004-05 season. For Spurs to equal or beat that Premier League record they would need to beat Hull, Newcastle, Norwich, Chelsea and Liverpool in that order.
We have done very well to reach five, haven't we? The run is certainly extendable.
First up though, next week will be the formidable task of matching Manchester City, who passed the 100 goal mark for all competitions this season during their 4-2 win over Cardiff. City do have two cup games to play between now and next Wednesday, but at 6-0 up against West Ham, and facing Watford at home in the FA Cup, they can afford to keep key players rested for our game.
As predicted in the Swansea match report, Emmanuel Adebayor was voted man of the match, but Christian Eriksen wasn't far behind. Both players exceeded 8 out of 10, after nearly 300 votes were cast this week.
Spurs have notched up three more points than they had at this stage last season. However, with the race for Champions League places hotter than ever, we know that our team need to get results against our rivals for those places in the 16 games remaining. That first test comes next week!
