Spurs v Chelsea stats to savour
Needless to say, the spursometer for the Chelsea game recorded some very high scores. It didn't quite match the highs of our early season 4-0 over QPR, but letting three goals didn't help there.
Harry Kane's 9.2 is the highest individual mark since Gareth Bale scored 9.3 in our 3-2 away win against West Ham in February, 2013.
Nacer Chadli's 8.5 is his highest of the season, and since he came to Spurs. He also hit 8.2 in that QPR game. Chadli, Eriksen and Kane are equally our top league scorers with 7 goals, although, of course, Harry is our top scorer with 17 in all competitions. That's already better than anybody managed last season. Can he beat Gareth Bale's 26 goals of two seasons ago?
This was our first win over Chelsea in nearly five years, since 17th April, 2010 (also a 5.30pm kick off), when Phil Dowd was also the referee! Jermain Defoe scored from the spot after a John Terry handball offence. Gareth Bale put us 2-0 up before the break. Terry got sent off in the second half for a second bookable offence, and Frank Lampard scored a consolation goal.
The last time we sang "We want six" against Chelsea was when we beat them 5-1 in the home leg of the 2002 League Cup semi-final. You have to go back to December 30th 1961 for the last time we put five past Chelsea in a league game. That was a 5-2. Cliff Jones scored a hat-trick, with Dave Mackay and Les Allen also adding to the tally.
Jimmy Greaves was playing only his fourth game for Spurs that day, and had also played in the Boxing Day 2-0 away win against his old team. That season, we went on to beat Burnley in the FA Cup Final. Is there an omen there, perhaps?
Keep that Spurs smile going everybody!
