We have not played at Craven Cottage for League points since February 1978
when we were on our way to securing promotion following relegation from
the old Division One. We took the lead after 10 minutes when Peter Taylor
converted John Duncan's cross before Brian Greenaway equalised for the
home side in the dying minutes of the match.
Our last visit to Craven Cottage in the top flight was as long ago as
December 1967 when Fulham were sliding to relegation. As I recall, that
was Frank Saul's final appearance for Tottenham. Bad weather prevented
Spurs from playing for three weeks and in the ensuing period, Saul left
for Southampton as the make-weight in the deal that brought Chivers to
Tottenham. We were not to see the best of Chivers for another year or so,
despite a fairly good start by scoring some vital goals.
Fulham have an old link with Tottenham since they were one of the reasons
why Spurs finally considered making the switch to professional football.
Keen students of Spurs history should know all about Ernie Payne and his
missing boots - email me if you don't already know that story.
The West London side were elected to the Football League one year before
Tottenham but did not achieve top flight status until after winning
promotion at the end of season 1948-49. They only had a brief three years
on that occasion before being relegated at the end of season 1951-52 but
were back before the decade was out, this time for seven years. But after
Fulham went down, they had some very bad times and even had a spell near
the basement of the Football League, being threatened with relegation to
the Conference. But over the last 5 years, backed by Al Fayed's fortune,
Fulham have climbed back to the top. They will spend next season away from
Craven Cottage whilst their ground is re-modelled.
Fulham have always been a friendly club. I can think of only one spat
between Spurs and Fulham. That arose out of the juxtaposition of an advert
for preventing venereal disease and biographies of the Tottenham players
in the Fulham programme in February 1965. Tottenham strongly protested
about this and eventually extracted an apology from them.
There have been a fair number of transfers between the two clubs but the
most interesting one was one that never occurred. There were rumours in
the wake of John White's untimely decease that Spurs would try to persuade
Johnny Haynes to play for them. That would have been interesting since
Haynes was a brilliant long-ball passer whereas, at that time, Spurs were
a short-passing team. One of the most significant transfers was that of
Alan Mullery. His transfer was delayed until after Fulham had beaten
Liverpool 1-0 on 14th March 1964 in the hope of denting Liverpool's
championship aspirations. Mullery took a long time to settle with
Tottenham before becoming a popular skipper of the side after Mackay had
left for Derby County.
In recent weeks, Spurs have produced some dreadful football with equally
disastrous results. With the bottom half of the table tightly packed, it
is imperative that Spurs MUST win on Sunday afternoon. No other result
will be acceptable. A win will ensure Spurs survive for another season in
the top flight. A defeat will leave many supporters feeling very depressed
in mind coming after our hopes of qualifying for Europe earlier this
season. I think Spurs will just about shade the match but those going to
Craven Cottage or watching the match on Sky should be prepared to chew
their nails until very late in the match!
COME ON YOU SPURS!
Cheers, Brian
