Much of this preview has been given over to statistics because we have not
played Fulham on a regular basis over the last 30 years or so. Until
fairly recently, Fulham had spent much of their time in the lower echelons
of the Football League. It was ironic that Fulham who were the first club
to pay a player £100 a week were one of the clubs hardest hit by the fact
some clubs have benefited from the fact they helped to shatter the
one-time maximum wage. It is also ironic we are now hearing calls for a
cap to be applied to footballer's wages!
Fulham have never been a successful club and they have few tangible
honours. Their current owner, Al Fayed, plans to change that as his
ambition is to make Fulham the Manchester United of the South. Unhappily,
this means they have had to quit Craven Cottage to ground share with
Queen's Park Rangers. They look unlikely to return to Craven Cottage for
the foreseeable future with the NIMBY brigade out in force to frustrate
Fulham's plans to redevelop their ground.
However, Fulham have made an indifferent start to the season so they
already have a vital need to start to pick up points. Tottenham need the
points for different reasons as they need to win to retain their perch at
the top of the table. We have a fairly good record when playing Fulham
away but we never seem to play well at Loftus Road. Fulham have qualified
for the UEFA Cup via the Inter Toto Cup and are set to make their debut in
that competition, one which Tottenham have won in 1972 and 1984.
Fulham have had a number of well known players over the years. Johnny
Haynes was probably their best known player of his time but Bobby Robson,
now managing Newcastle United, has played and managed Fulham in his time.
Alan Mullery also played for Fulham before and after his stint at
Tottenham. Fulham also supplied George Cohen to the 1966 England World Cup
squad.
The funniest incident I can recall between the two clubs occurred in 1967.
Fred Callaghan, playing for Fulham, and Terry Venables were old mates and
they thought it would be a huge joke to have a pretend punch-up.
Unfortunately for them, Harry New was the referee and he never had a sense
of humour, promptly dismissing both for violent behaviour! Manager
Nicholson subsequently threw the book at Venables. I think Nicholson's
disenchantment with Venables began to grow from that incident. It was
clear that Venables would never fit in to the Tottenham style of play,
though Nicholson persisted for another season.
Looking ahead to the match on Wednesday night, I think we will probably
win. The margin of victory will depend on how bothered we are to break
sweat. I think we are capable of winning 3-0 at least BUT we will have to
watch Saha and Malbranque carefully. We need to put van der Sar under
pressure!
COME ON YOU LILYWHITES!!!!!!
Cheers, Brian
