By the time Spurs play Fulham at their temporary home at QPR's Loftus Road on Wednesday night, Arsenal should have beaten Manchester City at home, and Liverpool and Manchester United should be on their way to comfortable home victories, against Birmingham and Bolton respectively. Whilst nothing is ever certain in football, surely Spurs will have to win this game to hold on to their position at the top of the Premiership.
Whilst every game for Fulham is an away match this season, they did convincingly beat Bolton on Day One of the season, and of course have won their way through the Inter-Toto Cup into the UEFA cup proper.
Fulham have strengthened their squad slightly, with ex-Arsenal Japanese international, Junichi Inamoto getting a higher profile than he did down the other end of Seven Sisters Road.
Spurs beat Fulham 4-0 at home and 2-0 away in the Premiership last term, so Mr Fayed's team will be keen to break that scoring duck, although they did get a goal against us, when we beat them 2-1 at Craven Cottage in the League Cup game, which I watched just three seats away from the one and only Ricky Villa, with whom I recently shared a fiftieth birthday. (I should make clear we were not in each other's company). Yes - our hero was born on the same day as me - 18th August, 1952!
Robbie Keane will surely make his debut for Spurs, although, having travelled to Russia for his International for the Republic of Ireland, he may be put on the bench, whilst Les Ferdinand gets a start. This will be just one of many selection headaches for Hoddle as more players return to fitness. Stephen Carr is close to match fitness again. Christian Ziege will be back after his bereavement, and Darren Anderton must be close to a return. Sergei Rebrov is once again likely to be left in the cold.
Fulham will play their pretty approach football, but as long as Anthony Gardner returns, then I am confident the Spurs defence can keep the home strikers out. I predict a 2-0 victory for Spurs. Post match comment:- Well, I was right until the 68th minute:(
