The days of swashbuckling football have gone from Fulham. Those heady days
as they climbed out of long obscurity in the lower regions of the Football
League have gone to be replaced by nervous brittle football and a desire
by their more ambitious players to seek employment elsewhere. This is
hardly the fault of their current manager, Chris Coleman. He missed out on
the chance of playing at the highest level because he crashed a fast car
to put himself out of playing contention.
They are currently homeless, playing their home games in Shepherds Bush.
Their grandiose plans for the redevelopment of Craven Cottage have been
scaled down, partly due to the opposition from local residents and partly
due to the change in the financial world. No longer are bankers prepared
to underwrite grandiose stadium schemes - even Arsenal have discovered
that with their stadium sited at a dustbin site.
Fulham's better days, prior to the current Premiership spell, were back in
the 1950s and 1960s, when they spent most seasons struggling to avoid
relegation. They usually scrambled out of the most impossible positions at
the last moment or so until one year, they went to the well once to often.
They had a famous player called Johnny Haynes, who came to the fore when
Fulham were in the old Second Division. He captained England and one of
the players in the England team of that era was one Bobby Robson. In 1962,
Johnny Haynes was involved in a car crash which ended his international
career. However, he made a full recovery, unlike Chris Coleman, to such an
extent, that Spurs tried to sign him in the wake of John White's death in
1964.
Spurs must be feeling confident of beating Fulham in the wake of our
goal-less draw at Anfield on Wednesday night. There are signs the team is
beginning to gel. Postiga and Zamora look to be a quality strike force
once they gel. Not since Archibald and Crooks have we had two strikers who
have looked lethal, although we did very briefly have Klinsmann and
Sheringham in partnership, I think Spurs are capable of beating Fulham 3-0
on Saturday.
COME ON YOU SPURS!
Cheers, Brian
