Tottenham's record at Maine Road was very poor in the League, winning only
10 matches and drawing 13 out of 53 visits. Manchester City at home was
often a safe home banker where Spurs were concerned. They have been
humiliated at Maine Road on several occasions.
The occasion that sticks out in my memory most is the 4-1 thrashing at
Maine Road on December 9th 1967. There had been an extremely cold snap in
the North and the pitch was covered in ice. I suspect that if the game had
not been covered by the 'Match of The Day' cameras, the referee would have
called the game off. Spurs went ahead early on (Greaves, of course!) but
as the temperature dropped, the pitch became a skid pan and the Spurs
players simply gave up trying. Manager Nicholson was furious with his
players for not trying but most probably had the forthcoming game with
Olympique Lyonnaise in mind. At that time, tactical changes were still not
permitted, otherwise I am sure manager Nicholson would have pulled players
off.
Strange as it may seem, there was a time when Manchester City were the
better team in Manchester whilst their neighbours struggled in the old
Division 2. And Manchester City are also the only Champions to have
suffered the indignity of being relegated the season after winning the
Championship! And that despite scoring more goals than anybody else in
Division 1 that season and having a better defence than most teams!
Over the years, Manchester City have had their ups and downs but they
always seem to have at least one cult personality in their side. It looks
as if Nicolas Anelka has found his soul mate in Kevin Keegan. Anelka has
been at a number of clubs since leaving Arsenal but has created a
reputation for being moody and impatient with lesser mortals. Anelka has
been a major threat in his games with Manchester City scoring 14 goals in
38 appearances last season and 6 goals from 6 matches this season. It
means that Tottenham's defence will receive a more rigorous examination
than it did against Coventry.
The big question for Tottenham is whether they can take the confidence
they have acquired from Wednesday night's victory and build on that
further. A lot will depend on the defence, particularly regarding how the
protect Keller. He was left very exposed in the home games against Fulham
and Southampton. It has been suggested that the departure of Sullivan has
taken the edge off Keller's game now he does not have anyone breathing
down his neck. But I believe the problems arise more due to the fact
Richards has missed much of the season and the relative inexperience of
Gardner.
Wednesday's match showed us that Kanoute and Keane can link up as a duo
but we also need to assess Zamora and Postiga, possibly using one of them
in the hole behind the front pair. I do think 4-4-2 is a better line-up
than some than Hoddle had. I think 4-4-2 is more flexible than 3-5-2.
Certainly we looked all the better for Keane returning to the side. We
should also move heaven and earth and award Ricketts a new contract before
the old one expires. I have been impressed with what I have seen of
Ricketts, albeit on television, so far. He seems to be much more mobile
than Simon Davies, who seems to have been burdened by the role Hoddle was
asking him to undertake,
Looking ahead to Sunday, I'm none too optimistic about the outcome. We
need an awful lot of luck for starters. The best I feel we can hope for is
a narrow defeat. I can't see us winning anything here given our poor
record in Manchester.
COME ON YOU SPURS! Prove me wrong!!!!!
Cheers, Brian
