The last time we met Liverpool in a Cup competition, we went on to win the trophy! Then it was called the Worthington Cup, and Spurs beat Liverpool at Anfield by a margin of 3-1. A Liverpool old boy, John Scales, scored one of the goals, with Iversen and Nielsen scoring the others. Spurs had gone three up in the first hour, and Michael Owen's late goal was a consolation. Jamie Carragher was the only participant in that game who could feature (in theory) in this re-match tomorrow. Carragher scored own goals in both league games against us that season, with both sides winning their home games.
Theory is one thing of course, and the word is that Liverpool will field a somewhat weakened line-up, despite reaching the quarter-finals of this year's Carling Cup. Such a policy would be consistent of Rafael Benitez, who has rested his top line players so far in this tournament. Steven Gerrard has just returned from injury and played well against Arsenal on Sunday (Thanks very much to Liverpool by the way for beating the gooners!), and it will be interesting to see if Neil Mellor takes part. Liverpool are woefully short of strikers, due to the injuries to Cise, Baros, and now Garcia (not a true striker, but played up front in their absence), and may need the services of Mellor, who scored that fantastic injury time winner on Sunday, and has scored two of the goals that got Liverpool to this stage.
Liverpool entered the competition at the Third Round stage due to their European campaign and beat another team who received a bye - Championship side Millwall - by 3-0, with two goals from Baros and one from Diao. Mellor got both goals in their home tie against Middlesbrough last time out. Spurs lost out on penalties to Middlesbrough at this stage last year, and our team will feel confident after a good win against "Boro" on Sunday, and remembering our three away wins in this year's competition so far.
The match is a sell-out, and whilst Liverpool might have some unfamiliar names in their line-up, such as England under-21 midfielder John Welsh, Spurs will field their strongest available team, I'm sure, to try and make sure of progress to the semi-final for the first time in three years. The Spurs line-up is likely to be very similar to Sunday's team.
Even before facing Middlesbrough, and Liverpool's result on Sunday, this was the game of our forthcoming fixtures that I felt most confident about, and I am predicting a win for Spurs.
