I have to admit, that before this week-end's results, I was not getting too excited about this fixture. Whilst we have not got much of a record against Fulham, as is the situation with all our London Rivals in the Premiership, very few of Fulham's fans will bother to make the short trek across London, and they remain un-glamorous opposition. That is not to undermine their ability to get a result at White Hart Lane though.
Last year at The Cottage, Chris Coleman's side defeated us in our most dismal performance of the season, and Jacques Santini's last game as manager. At the time of the return match, Martin Jol was being linked with a vacancy for manager at Ajax, but thankfully that was an unfulfilled rumour. We did get our revenge as well, with goals from substitute strikers, Robbie Keane and the now departed Fredi Kanoute, who I think Spurs have missed, having failed to replace him with a player who matches or improves Kanoute's abilities.
Fulham did, after all embarrass Glenn Hoddle's side two years ago with a 3-0 win at the Lane, their first in the League since the 1948-9 season. Their goals that day came from Barry Hayles (now plying his trade at Millwall) and Boa Morte who remains a member of the Fulham team and a real threat. Fulham feel they have an advantage as they got away with fielding a reserve side in last week's Carling Cup, beating Lincoln 5-4 thanks to a last gasp goal, whereas most of the Spurs team were huffing and puffing (doing little else) at Grimsby.
Now I do feel excited, because Spurs COULD go fourth in the table with a win tomorrow night! Yes, I know that's the signal for one of Spurs bad nights, but surely the players will have had such an almighty kick up the "Harris" that they will not fail us this time? Edgar Davids will return, get booked and therefore get suspended for Saturday's game at Charlton, and Spurs will welcome back Mido, who served his three match ban, and won a personal hearing to prevent further absences, which the FA would have loved to award him. Michael Carrick will miss out, but that gives an opportunity to others to shine, and maybe even Pedro Mendes can win a repeal against what seems like exile from the first team squad. Wayne Routledge is out for a further two months and Aaron Lennon is sure to figure in this game at some stage, after a great show at Grimsby that none of his colleagues could equal.
Fulham's only league win so far has come against Everton, who are still struggling in amongst the bottom three, where Fulham could lie after tonight's game if they lose badly enough.
Brian McBride is Fulham's top scorer so far, with three to his name, but despite their poor results to date, they do still have quality in their side such as Radzinski, Claus Jensen, and Steed Malbranque.
So, COME ON YOU SPURS! Give us the win we all crave to put us fourth, and then we can go to The Valley on Saturday, win and go second! I can dream, can't I? I'll predict - Spurs 2 Fulham 0.
