This time last year, Spurs were settled in the top half of the table, having lost only two games, whilst Blackburn Rovers were stuck in the bottom half with 18 points from 13 games. That information has to be encouraging to both teams this week-end really, as Mark Hughes men had a great second half of the season to climb up the table and actually contend with us for the coveted fourth spot, finishing one place behind us in 6th. Thus, both teams must realise that there is still plenty to play for on the Premiership front.
When the two teams last met in March, Rovers were only three points behind us, but Spurs increased their lead thanks to an exhilarating 3-2 win which included one of the best goals of the season by Robbie Keane.
There was no such excitement when we met at Ewood Park for the third game of the season on a Wednesday night in August. In fact there were no goals at all. There was a lot of disappointment too for those who made the pilgrimage North. At that time, Edgar Davids was a new Spurs player and loads of people wanted to see him play. Edgar didn't start though, and the theory was that Martin Jol was keeping some powder dry for Chelsea, who we met on the following Saturday.
Now Edgar himself is begging for a Premiership start, and with Jermaine Jenas out this week, Davids' chance may come, although he may be frustrated by Tom Huddlestone getting promoted instead.
The team news is not good for either side. Spurs will definitely miss Chimbonda, Jenas, Stalteri, and Anthony Gardner. Aaron Lennon is also very doubtful for Sunday's game. We must just hope that some of these players are available for next Thursday's game in Leverkusen.Teemu Tainio may be available for selection, having returned to training this week, and it seems that Steed Malbranque will also be available. So, there is still plenty of choice for Spurs, with all four strikers also in contention.
Blackburn will miss Robbie Savage (Spurs fans will be sorry!), Ryan Nelsen, Steven Reid and Jason Roberts. I am sure they have missed the pace of Craig Bellamy up front, but they do have Benni McCarthy and Morten Gandst Pedersen available. Spurs will also have to keep an eye on former gooner David Bentley, who has been in fine form for Rovers.
So, here we are, with both teams suffering in the bottom half, and perhaps both enduring the same experience of European success, coupled with League frustration. When I was on the way back from Spurs' game in Prague, I met Rovers' fans returning from Salzburg, where Rovers had come away with a 2-2 draw. At that point, Rovers had yet to win a game, but they then went on a run of four consecutive wins, including a win in their home leg in the UEFA Cup. Since then, Blackburn have won both their UEFA Cup second round games to date to give themselves the same strong position as Spurs. However, Rovers have lost 5 consecutive domestic games, inlcuding a League Cup defeat at Stamford Bridge.
Martin Jol might want Spurs to toughen up their act, but Spurs will find here opponents at least as much, if not more determined to win, and I vow, more resilient than Reading. It's going to be a question of who will be the toughest act on the pitch. I cannot feel confident about Spurs, and feel that a draw is the best to hope for. I'll go for 1-1.
