This time last year, Spurs were a full ten points above Everton in the Premiership table. Both sides seem to be going through a cycle of good/bad seasons, and whilst the Toffees finished 11th to our fifth, if they win tomorrow night's game, they'll be nine points ahead and 4 places above us. The potential points gap will be the significant factor, and of course, having beaten us at The Lane in August, the home side will feel more confident than ever, despite losing their last two home games against Spurs.
Last year it was a 33rd minute Robbie Keane penalty that was sufficient for a 1-0 win, and the season before Noe Pamarot's header did the trick, on the day when Jamie Redknapp saw yellow from Graham Poll, for his challenge on Cahill, then had to suffer a retrospective red card. This August's result came as a great shock against a team that we have been able to regard as fodder in all but three of our 29 Premiership game history. It is over 20 years since Everton did a League "Double" over Spurs.
Everton have never quite regained the heights that they achieved after their unbeaten 7 game start to the season, but they have spent the whole season in the top half of the table. After a spell of only three wins in 11 league games, they have returned to form, with just one league defeat (away to Manchester City) in the last 8 games. Recently they got revenge over Blackburn for their FA Cup defeat in the Third Round, when both Merseyside teams were knocked out. Everton fans were subsequently upset over Rafael Benitez's label of "small club" directed to their Derby rivals, but according to the recent business list, Everton are below both Liverpool and Spurs in the table of richest clubs (according to income only).
To a certain extent Everton's dip in form could be ascribed to the absence or failure to score of Andy Johnson, who has returned to scoring form recently, with 4 goals in his last 9 games, and a total of 10 this season. Spurs will need to watch him very carefully, and also of course try to avoid contact in the area!
This game was due to be played on the night we were beaten at The Emirates in the second leg of the Carling Cup semi-final. It has taken till last Sunday for Spurs to regain some of the pride lost as a result of that defeat and the two Premiership losses that followed.
I have heard no team news as yet, but I suspect that Ledley King will be the only absentee through injury. Berbatov must surely start after his two goal burst on Sunday, and Robbie Keane is likely to keep his place too, not least because of his status as vice-captain. Other issues such as who starts in the middle, with Jenas again available, and whether Gardner or Rocha starts at the back are a matter of guess-work. My guess is that Gardner will keep his place, but that Jenas will replace Tainio.
The home side has every incentive to win, whilst the away side has a desperate need for Premiership points this week, just to make sure we don't have an occasional glance over our shoulders. A tough battle is in prospect then, and whilst Everton will be rested, Spurs have their rythym, and might just nick it!
The Spurs Odyssey report will be published on Thursday morning.
