Rebrov
If you are looking for an omen to give you confidence about tonight's game, how about this statistic?
When Spurs beat Chelsea in the FA Cup Final forty years ago, they had to succeed in a replay in the FA Cup quarter-final that year too! Add to that the fact that it was in 1967 that Pat Jennings scored his goal in the Charity Shield, and you can't go wrong!
I've had a look down the years and found the following records of FA Cup quarter-final replays:-
SEASON RD H/A Score Opposition
1900-01 3R H 3-0 Reading
1921-22 4R H 2-1 Cardiff
1952-53 6R H 2-2 Birmingham
1952-53 6(2R) N 1-0 Birmingham
1960-61 6R H 5-0 Sunderland
1966-67 6R H 6-0 Birmingham
1970-71 6R H 0-1 Liverpool
1978-79 6R A 0-2 Man Utd
Note that in the early years the rounds of the FA Cup were numbered differently
As can be seen, on three occasions when Spurs have won their quarter-final replays, they have gone on to win the FA Cup! If such a result takes place tonight, Spurs will justifiably feel confident of at least making the Final. However, despite the great game and result at Stamford Bridge, we start again from scratch tonight.
Both clubs seem to be holding their cards close to their chests regarding team news, but as I reported on Saturday, Jose Mourinho did manage to give Drogba, Lamaprd and Ballack relative breathers. Makelele will surely return to play a more effective role in front of the defence than Diarra did in the first game
Spurs will miss Tainio from that first game, but Jenas will be present, and I think that Didier Zokora has been hdl back to again confront Lampard. Berbatov and Keane will lead the attack, and Martin Jol might play another guess where Lennon will play game tonight.
One thing is for certain! It will be a humdinger of a game, and Spurs' form is such that they can be regarded as Chelsea's equals. Let's hope they can prove it on the field. I dare not make a prediction, except to say it could go to penalties.
