There were more Spurs fans in Prague for Thursday's UEFA Cup tie, than the number of Fulham fans that will manage the trip from west to North London tomorrow. Fulham had an awful start to the season with a 5-1 thrashing at Old Trafford, but they surprised everyone (including their own fans!) when they beat Newcastle 2-1 last week despite losing summer signing Jimmy Bullard to that awful cruciate knee injury.
Bullard will seek specialist treatment in the USA, but will miss the rest of the season in all likelihood. Fulham's win at St. James' Park was attained with the help of Spurs' loanee Wayne Routledge whose crosses led to both goals. Routledge will not be able to take part in this game, and it is frustrating that we do not have his services in the prolonged absence of Aaron Lennon. Routledge is on a season-long loan, as part of the Malbranque deal, and we all know that Spurs signed an unfit player. Fulham fans will have to wait for the return game at Craven Cottage in January for their chance to bait their former hero.
Fulham have a good record against Spurs in the 10 Premiership games to date with one more win than Spurs who have a vastly superior overall record against the "Cottagers". (There's a nickname with a dubious connotation, I wouldn't want for my club! - See this page)
The likes of skipper Boa Morte and ex-Spurs midfielder Michael Brown will be as determined as ever to prove their worth. Brown already has two yellow cards in four games, and some say he was lucky that it was only yellow at Old Trafford when he hacked down Ryan Giggs. Brown will get a good reception, I would suggest, as he did always work hard for Spurs. Our players will need to look out though!
For Spurs, despite a good win in Europe on Thursday, this match is crucial. With a difficult fixture next week at Anfield, it is vital that Spurs pick up three points from this game. Dimitar Berbatov might be fit, but it is difficult to forsee Martin Jol's strike pairing this Sunday. Jermaine Defoe scored an eighth minute winner in the home game last season, but Robbie Keane had a couple of good opportunities in the short time he was on the field in Prague on Thursday. Personally, I hope Berbatov makes it, and is partnered with either Jermain or Robbie.
Hossam Ghaly and Danny Murphy are in contention for a place, and Tom Huddlestone may have to make way for a fit Ghaly, who has shown some creative flair at Old Trafford and in pre-season. I would suggest that Jenas, and Zokora will play and that Davids and Tainio contest the place for left-side midfield.
Will Spurs fall foul to tiredness after Thursday night's away game? Can Fulham win a second consecutive away game? It's time for Spurs to score a resounding win, with only two league goals in four games (both against Sheffield United) so far. I fancy them to do it - by two or three.
