The great thing about football is that whatever the previous result, and whatever the situation, there is always the optimistic anticipation of the next game. The trouble with Spurs though, is that too often that next game is against a team against whom they have a dismal record. Liverpool at Anfield this Saturday is one such case.
So far this season, Spurs have even lost to the one team they virtually always beat - Everton - whilst losing as usual at The Reebock, and Old Trafford. Whilst the goalless draw against Fulham was an aberration, the sad fact is that our only two League goals of the season were scored in one match against bottom of the table Sheffield United.
Liverpool went some way to putting an indifferent start behind them on Wednesday night when Kuyt scored his forst Premiership goal and Xabi Alonso scored for the second time this year from his own half! This time, Newcastle's second-choice keeper, Steve Harper was the unfortunate victim. We can expect some chanting of Alonso's name this Saturday, and perhaps he'll have to be close marked as far as 60 yards out! Mind you, who knows whether or not Alonso will play this game, as second-guessing a Benitez line-up as as easy as winning the lottery!
Liverpool had two stunning winning runs in last season's Premiership campaign. The first ran for 10 games between October and December. After drawing at Bolton, they then beat us at Anfield on 14th January with a solitary goal by Harry Kewell, who is a long-term absentee from Liverpool's side. John Arne Riise is Liverpool's only other notable casualty, as he is still over a week away from match fitness.Liverpool ended last season with another run of 9 successive wins to finish third in the table.
Sadly, whilst Spurs are also at the lower end of the number of casualties amongst Premiership teams, two of those will be sorely missed this week. Dimitar Berbatov has aggravated his groin injury and is another week or two away from availability, and Aaron Lennon is weeks away from consideration, although he has resumed light training. Steed Malbranque has yet to put on a Spurs shirt (apart from his press conference), so we cannot say we will be missing him.
Spurs have only ever won one Premiership game here, back in August 1993, when Teddy Sheringham scored two first half goals to more than cancel Nigel Clough's 17th minute effort. The two teams were:- Liverpool - Grobbelar; Jones, Ruddock, Wright, Burrows (sub Walters); Clough, Nicol, Molby, Whelan; McManaman, Rush. Spurs - Thorstvedt; Mabbutt, Calderwood, Campbell; Sedgeley, Samways, Durie, Howells (sub Caskey); Dozzell, Sheringham.
With that win, Spurs had won three out of their four opening games, but went on to struggle that season, woefully missing the injured Sheringham, winning only 8 more games. Incredibly, Teddy scored 14 goals from only 17 League games, and thankfully returned to help us stay up in an end of season battle against the drop.
It's a big, big ask, but Spurs really do need a win this week. Otherwise the morale will sag, and the moaners will be out in force, starting to put the pressure on Martin Jol and his men. It has already been Spurs worst start for 14 years and we don't want it to go on any longer. Can they get a win? Somehow, I fear that will be too much, but hopefully we will get another entertaining Anfield game, with plenty of waggish, rather than malicious humour.
Spurs defence is on top form, whereas even Jamie Carragher has had his dodgy moments so far this term. I'll stick my neck out and say that Spurs might just nick this one to send us down the M6 with big grins.
