For the third year in succession, Spurs have something to play for on the last day of the season. For the second year in succession they are in control of their own destiny. Let's hope that for the first of those three years, Martin Jol's men can actually win such a game, and that by doing so secure fifth place in the Premiership. Whilst a point will guarantee a place in the UEFA Cup, if Spurs can play as they did in the second half against Blackburn, then surely they should be home and dry?
Of all their potential Premiership opponents, Spurs could hardly wish for more favourable opposition than Stuart Pearce's team this Sunday. Spurs have won the last 5 league meetings with City, and haven't lost since April, 2003. As can be seen by the above statistics, City have only managed to beat Spurs in two Premiership games, out of 19. It's a record that ranks alongside that of Everton, who have managed to beat us only three times in 30 games. Everton play at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and Spurs need to better their result to finish above them.
Man City famously finished their home season without scoring a league goal in front of their fans since New Year's Day, but their away record is pretty good. Only four teams have won more away games than the Sky Blues, who recently won three successive away games at Middlesbrough, Newcastle and Fulham. Their other victims have been Villa, Sheffield United and West Ham, so let's hope they remain without a scalp in London this season!
With Joey Barton suspended by his own club, and Michael Ball missing because of his televised stamp upon Ronaldo in last week's Manchester Derby, the emphasis once more for Pearce is likely to be upon his youngsters, but he also misses Micah Richards through injury. Spurs say they are "hopeful" about the fitness of Ricardo Rocha and (more importantly) Jermaine Jenas, but Anthony Gardner is doing fine at left back this week. Malbranque is doubtful, and Mido, Stalteri and Lee will not feature.
Jenas was missed on Thursday night, but Teemu Tainio must play somewhere in the middle, as Spurs have yet to lose a game this season where he has played the full 90 minutes. That amounts to 13 games, 8 of which were won. One of those wins was at The City of Manchester Stadium, so let's just keep the record going, shall we?
The key for Spurs will be the availability of their three top scorers, all of whom should have a part to play tomorrow. Why not start with all three, with Robbie Keane behind the front two? It worked on Thursday night, and an early goal should set Spurs on their way to a conclusive win and another European Tour!
COME ON YOU SPURS!
