Spurs last played Sheffield United in the Premiership in March 1994, when the points were shared in a 2-2 draw. These were bad days for both clubs, as United were relegated at the bottom of the table, and Spurs only confirmed their survival with a 2-0 win in their penultimate game at Oldham. Spurs scorers in that last Premiership game against United were Kevin Scott and Jason Dozzell. It took a long time, but thankfully, Spurs have made it back to the upper echelons, where they truly belong! (Incidentally, Spurs are now enjoying their longest run of years in the top flight and indeed any of the divisions in the Premiership/Football League)
The scorers of United's goals in that 1994 game were Brian Gayle and a young Nathan Blake, whose career has only just petered out, with a handful of games for Leicester and Leeds in the 2004-5 season.
United feature in a couple of great moments in our club history. They were the opponents on that great day in April 1901, when Spurs beat them in an FA Cup Final replay at Burnden Park, Bolton. The Sheffield United goalkeeper was the famous "Fatty Foulke" who weighed in at 22 stones (http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A3641708). Spurs made history (as they often have) by becoming the first non-league club to win the FA Cup.
Another great moment in Spurs history was achieved against Sheffield United in May 1963, when Jimmy Greaves HEADED in his 37th League goal of the season in a 4-2 win. Greaves' record still stands as the highest league tally in a season for Spurs.
There have been one or two less glorious moments for Spurs against this team, but perhaps I'll write about them when I preview the away fixture in February next year.
United have progressed well under the guidance of the vociferous Neil Warnock (Didn't he seem so nice and mellow on MOTD2 last night?!), who must watch this game from the stands due to a two-match ban imposed for misbehaviour at the end of last season. United finished third in 2002-3, but missed out in the play-offs, then finished 8th two seasons running, before making automatic promotion with their second place last term. The combative Stuart McCall is an able deputy for Warnock, and enjoyed his time in the Premiership, playing with Bradford.
It looks as if United will be spending wisely, and that fourth from bottom would be a great result for them at the end of this season. They have signed 21 year old Christian Nade from French club Troyes, but Nade will need a better scoring record than his 7 goals in a total of 51 league games. Nade was an unused substitute on Saturday, when Rob Hulse scored the first Premiership goal of the season, and Liverpool eventually managed a draw thanks to Rob Styles' generosity, when Gerrard went down in the area.
Defender David Sommeil has joined from Manchester City (also unused on Saturday), and 23 year old Mikele Leigertwood signed from Crystal Palace. Veteran players in the squad include Keith Gillespie and Neil Shipperley.
Spurs did meet United in July 2004 for a friendly, which former Blade Michael Brown had to miss through injury (http://www.spursodyssey.com/0405/su250704.html) Both squads have changed dramatically since this game, which was totally forgettable from a Spurs point of view.
United are now unbeaten in 9 competitive matches, and will come to White Hart Lane in good spirits after their excellent start. They will be determined not to go away empty-handed. They will probably fancy their chances too, on the evidence of Spurs poor effort on Saturday. Teemu Tainio makes a welcome return to the Spurs squad, and his strength will be valuable in the middle, where I am sure the tackles will be flying. Jermain Defoe is described as doubtful, with a foot injury, but Robbie Keane is bound to take part, and will probably start at the expense of Defoe.
Spurs must win their two home games this week, as their next fixture is at Old Trafford on September 9th. I hope to see a positive reaction to Saturday's set-back, and fancy us to win 2-0 with goals by Berbatov and Keano.
