When Spurs met Birmingham at White Hart Lane on 2nd December, we suffered our first defeat under the management of Juande Ramos, and the Brummies got their first victory with Alex Mcleish at the helm. Robbie Keane was our penalty taker, and scored two goals, including one spot kick after a foul on Berbatov, before being harshly sent off by referee Phil Dowd for a foul on ex-gooner Muamba. It was another former Arsenal player Sebastian Larsson, who delivered a devastating blow in added time as Birmingham gained their first win at The Lane since 1984.
With that win, Birmingham went to 12th place, while Spurs slipped to 16th. Since then, the Blues have managed just one league win, at home to Middlesbrough, and now sit just one point clear of the bottom three, whilst Spurs are secure in 11th place, and now hold the Carling Cup!
Despite the fact that Spurs (already in Europe next season) are stuck in mid-table, they have gone on record as saying that they will compete in every game to give due respect to those teams above and below them. Although it would be nice to climb a few places in the Premier League, the main target for Spurs now will be the UEFA Cup, and with another crucial game next Thursday against PSV Eindhoven, this game will be an opportunity to "use the squad" and again rest key players.
Alan Hutton is UEFA cup-tied, so will play against Birmingham. Gilberto is now fit, and he may well make his debut at left back at St. Andrews. Some of the press will suggest that Chimbonda is being punished over his behaviour when substituted last Sunday, but he will be needed at right back next Thursday. Ledley King will surely be rested, and Michael Dawson may be able to return next to Woodgate.
Senor Ramos will want to use some of his options in midfield and attack, whilst maintaining the necessary balance to get the sort of result that a team that beat Chelsea last week should achieve. It could mean starts for players such as Huddlestone, Tainio, O'Hara and Bent.
Birmingham will be missing the suspended Martin Taylor, who has earnt the sympathy of Spurs fans, not through any schadenfreude over Eduardo's injury, but as a result of the distress that Wenger's comments will have caused the player. Wenger's later retraction does not take away the psychological damage he may have caused a player whose tackle was lower and no more malicious than that of Eboue, who was sent off at Old Trafford two weeks ago.
The only injury problem for Birmingham is that of midfielder Olivier Kapo, still some way from recovery from a hamstring. James mcFadden scored that brilliant free kick last week, and will be a danger, but I expect Spurs to be sufficiently motivated and skilled to bring back three points on Saturday. I'll predict a 2-0 win.
Revenge for that 3-2 defeat ought to be motivation enough!
