Having presented statistics at the beginning of February to support my very confident statement that Spurs would not qualify for a UEFA Cup League placing, I now find that I have to eat my words, following two excellent wins in the last week!
Spurs now have 39 points from 28 games, and the best comparison that can be made is with the same stage two years ago. This was the season when we stood a very real chance of qualifying in the penultimate game at The Riverside, when we sadly lost 1-0, and saw our hopes dashed.
There is still a lot for Spurs to do, but if we play as well as we did against Bolton, and West Ham play as badly as they did at Charlton, then we should beat them about 8-0! Whilst that is unlikely, a win is on the cards (not that I am counting chickens), and those immediately above us have losable games. The relevant fixtures are as follows:-
Arsenal v Reading
Portsmouth v Chelsea
Sheffield Utd v Everton
The Carling Cup Final has ensured that sixth place in the Premiership will be enough for Europe and depending upon the FA Cup winners/finalists then seventh could also be good enough.
So, in one short week, Spurs' season has changed shape. Let's hope they don't fail us at Upton Park!
