The pressure is already on Martin Jol and his team, after their pathetic start to the new Barclays Premier League season, in front of a demanding Tottenham crowd. After the board's £40 million investment during the close season, only one of the four players signed started at Sunderland. With Gareth Bale still (presumably) unfit and Kevin-Prince Boateng apparently not yet conditioned for a Premier League game, Jol will surely have to give £16 million man Darren Bent a start tomorrow night.
Whether that means one of stand-in skipper Robbie Keane or star-striker Dimitar Berbatov standing down, or perhaps Keane sitting behind a front two, remains to be seen, but Spurs must surely start with a side with more flair and creativity. By that I mean I would like to see Adel Taarabt feature. Taarabt had an excellent pre-season and was played in that position behind the strikers, or on the left of midfield.
We hope of course that Michael Dawson returns, but if not we must hope for Rocha to shore up the central defence alongside Kaboul, as I fear Gardner's confidence may be shot for a while. If we see an unchanged starting line-up, the fans could be on the players' backs in no time at all.
Until last year of course, we would have felt supremely confident of three points, as Everton are one of our favourite opponents. The picture of Martin Jol on this page was taken after the 2-0 defeat by a 10-man visiting team. If the same happens again tomorrow, Spurs will take ages to recover (if at all) with Old Trafford and the gooners on the horizon after Saturday's home game with Derby.
Everton have had a relatively quiet transfer window to date, making the Tim Howard deal permanent, signing Phil Jagielka from relegated Sheffield United, and Wigan's left back Leighton Baines. Baines is out injured for a few days yet, and Jagielka started on the bench on Saturday in the Toffees' 2-1 win over Wigan. David Moyles might have been showing Jol the way, having faith in two of his home-grown players (Osman and Anichebe) who scored the winning goals. Everton's line-up was familiar, and with Tim Cahill out for a few weeks yet, Mikel Arteta and Andy Johnson will be the danger men.
So, we know what we need - a convincing performance and a good three points. Hopefully the crowd will get behind the team, and lift them to a rousing performance. I think it will be close and cannot confidently predict better than 2-1 for Spurs.
