Spurs last played Fulham on Boxing Day forty years ago, in 1967. The game finished in a 2-2 draw, with both Spurs goals scored by Cliff Jones, who signed for Fulham in 1968, but where he did not play for long, due to injury. No doubt the sprightly Spurs legend will be in the hospitality suite as usual to tell many tales of his successful Spurs and International career. Spurs have now confirmed the signing of Cardiff full back Chris Gunter (As reported by Spurs Odyssey on Friday), and once again we can boast two Welsh Internationals as we used to do when Jones and England played for Spurs and Wales. Before that it was Jones and Medwin!
Despite their 2-1 defeat on Saturday, Spurs remain in the top six form sides in the Premier League based upon the last 6 games, with 3 wins and a draw during that time. Fulham on the other hand are in the bottom three of that league, without a win, and having dragged themselves out of the bottom three of the league table with a draw in their last game at home to Wigan.
Short-term manager Laurie Sanchez was sacked before the Wigan game, and Fulham would have hoped for all three points against fellow relegation candidates. Whilst not being blase about the situation, because we are only 4 points ahead of "The Cottagers", Spurs must be clear favourites to win on Boxing Day, and with another home game on Saturday, we can continue to climb up the form table, if not the league proper, due to the 8 point gap between us and the top half.
Sanchez was allowed to bring in loads of players during the summer, and whilst Fulham might have had a bit of bad luck early in the season, Sanchez has failed to bring consistency, and paid the full penalty when Fulham dropped into the bottom three 10 days ago. Former player John Collins is being mentioned as successor, but it seems that Ray Lewington will keep the job for a second game this week.
Fulham have yet to win an away game this season, and their last Premier League away win was in September, 2006 at Newcastle. No wonder so few of their fans follow them on their travels! BBC's northern correspondent - the flowery Stuart Hall - berated Fulham's 200 strong contingent at Everton recently. I doubt that many more will travel to The Lane this week.
Fulham haven't scored a league goal here since August 2003, when they embarrassed us in a 3-0 win. At Craven Cottage this season, Spurs twice had a two-goal lead, but let the home side back, including one of several 90th minute goals this season, to let slip two points.
Spurs must not under-estimate our Boxing Day opposition. Christmas has a habit of providing some weird results, and Ray Lewington has had a little more time to work with his squad. Fulham do have good players, including Simon Davies playing some of his best football since he left us.
However, the odds must be severely against our visitors, and despite the probability that our injury list will not be diminished since Saturday, I do fancy Spurs to win 3-1!
Please note that due to the festivities, my match report may be delayed. I wish you all a truly Happy Christmas, and I hope fervently that you, and your loved ones enjoy good health and prosperity in 2008!
Happy Christmas! It IS good to be a Spur!
