It's a mouth-watering fixture, isn't it? Seventeenth plays eighteenth! (Yes, I am being ironic!) The home side has not won in the Premier League for 10 games, and the visitors have lost their last 6 and have also not won for 10 games. It was on August 18th (my birthday folks!) when Spurs beat Derby 4-0 and Wigan beat Sunderland 3-0, with Heskey one of their scorers.
Wigan's total loss of form might be related to Emile Heskey's injury. Heskey enjoyed a September reprise with the England team before falling foul to the dreaded metatarsal syndrome, and he is close to regaining full fitness.
One time team-mate of Darren Bent - namesake Marcus is one of Wigan's top scorers alongside Sibierski, who was a useful player for Newcastle last season, and previously at Manchester City. They both have three of Wigan's 10 league goals to their name.
Currently manager-less, with Frank Barlow looking after the team, Wigan lost the likes of Lee MCulloch to Rangers, Leighton Baines to Everton and Andreas Johansson to Alborg, where he has scored 4 goals so far this term, and will no doubt hope to repeat his double scoring feat at Spurs in three weeks' time. Johansson scored both Wigan's goals in this fixture two seasons ago, when we only managed a 2-2 draw.
Wigan have imported former Newcastle defender Titus Bramble, Mario Melchiot and one-time Spur Michael Brown. All three played last week against Chelsea, and Bramble's presence may be one of their weaknesses! Wigan also have Jason Koumas, and still have Paul Scharner and Danny Landzaat in their team along with former young England keeper Chris Kirkland, whose father landed a winning bet, when Kirkland won a full England cap last year against Greece.
It appears to me that Wigan do have the components for a successful Premier League team, and after all they did have a fantastic first season, but clearly they have been lacking direction since Paul Jewell's resignation in the Spring. Jewell has not written himself out of interest in the vacancy either.
When we met Wigan last year (also in November), we scored three goals in a League game for the first time in the season. Dimitar Berbatov was easily the man of the match with a classy goal and two assists. Juande Ramos has had a fairly gentle introduction to life in the Premier League, but already in only his fourth match in charge, he finds himself in a must-win situation. we must hope for at least three goals from Spurs, and an enthusiastic performance by Berbatov.
If Spurs cannot beat a side struggling like Wigan, then they will deserve to stay in the relegation battle for a long time yet. On the other hand, the win that we ought to witness, will lift us a couple of places and a few points clear of the bottom three, ready to face the rest of the league journey with new-found confidence.
It's a game we must win, and I am confident we will. I am sure they were saving their energy last night in Israel for a faster-paced goal-scoring feast on Sunday! I'll take us to win 3-1.
