The last time we played Arsenal on league duty was on December 22nd last year. Arsenal were on top form then, having won 5 of their preceding 6 league games, including a 1-0 win over Chelsea in their previous game. Spurs had won 3 of their 6 games, and the last of these had been their first away win of the season at Portsmouth! Berbatov had scored our winner at Pompey; had played a big part in our 2-0 League Cup win at Eastlands; and did score the Spurs goal on this day against the gooners.
That league game was a decent performance by our lads, but of course we prefer to remember the success we enjoyed in the Carling Cup semi-final. There will be a few 5-1 chants tomorrow night!
As it was in December, it is now, insofar as we travel in hope rather than expectation. But it is like that for Spurs fans at the best of times. Perhaps with our new manager there is ground for such hope.
Harry Redknapp's record in his last spell for Portsmouth against Arsenal does not augur particularly well for us, but he started with a team in the bottom three in December 2005. Harry lost his first game after this appointment against Arsenal 4-0 in that December. Since then he managed 4 draws and one further defeat which came in September 2007.
Still, no less a person than Bill Nicholson lost his first Derby in charge by 4-1 at White Hart Lane in January 1959. However, "Sir" Bill went on to establish supremacy over our near rivals, with 7 wins, 2 draws and just one defeat in his next 10 Derby matches. What we would give for a record like that these days!
Harry Redknapp's first team selection is of course a mystery, but he has awarded squad numbers to those who had been disenfranchised by Juande Ramos, such as Ricardo Rocha, Paul Stalteri, Kevin Prince-Boateng, Hossam Ghaly and Adel Taarabt. None of them are likely to start surely, but maybe one will find his way to the 7-man bench.
David Bentley will be eager to play this one of course, and seems to have made sufficiemt impression upon his new boss with his performance against Bolton. Having started his career as an Arsenal Junior, Bentley played one league game for them against Portsmouth in May 2004. That was a draw, but Bentley had also played (as substitute) in a 5-1 FA Cup win for the gooners against Portsmouth in March that year.Bentley played in just 7 other Cup games for Arsenal.
Bentley spent the 2004-05 season on loan at Norwich, then moved to Blackburn the following season. The first time he played against his old team was not until December 2006 at The Emirates, when Blackburn lost 6-2. he had more joy in the FA Cup 5th Round of that season, when Blackburn won the replay 1-0. Bentley has yet to score against Arsenal, so maybe that's a record to be broken tomorrow?
After hiccups at Fulham and at home to Hull, the gooners are flying again really, and have won 4 of their last 6 games. 4 of those games and 3 of those wins have been away from home, whilst Spurs have failed to take advantage of four home games in the same period.
Gareth Bale will be available again tomorrow, having served his one match suspension for his professional foul at Stoke. Ekotto surely did enough on Sunday to keep his place at left back, and perhaps the pace of Bale to assist him will counter the presence (if selected) of the World Cup Tourist of 2006 Theo Walcott.
On form then the home side are likely winners. Redknapp joked on TV after Sunday's win that he would get 9 points from his first three games. In reality any point gained from this game and Liverpool on Saturday will be a bonus. The renewed team spirit and application might just be enough to get a point from this game. I'll go for a 1-1.
