Looking for an omen?

If you are looking for an omen regarding tomorrow night's game at White Hart Lane, maybe this is the one.................Almost 10 years ago to the day, at the same stage of the League Cup competition, Spurs travelled to Anfield in hope rather than anticipation, as usual. Against a side including Brad Friedel in goal, Jamie Carragher at the back, and Michael Owen and Robbie fowler up front, Spurs managed a quite amazing 3-1 win with goals by Steffen Iversen, former Liverpool player John Scales, and Allan Nielsen, who would go on to score the winning goal in the 1999 Worthington Cup Final.

In that same season, Jamie Carragher scored own goals against us at home and away in the League. He has already done that in this season's Premier League game, so maybe a 3-1 win would be a decent bet for this game! Liverpool, after all, will be sending a "League Cup" side. Rafa Benitez has already announced that Club Captain Steven Gerrard will be rested, and I am sure that others such as Robbie Keane will also be given a break in anticipation of Liverpool's Saturday lunch-time game at Bolton.

However, The Reds have plenty of depth, and their 21 year old Brazilian Lucas looks sure to start in Gerrard's role. Fernando Torres is continuing his come-back after a hamstring injury, and may get a run out against us, so Harry Redknapp cannot be complacent, if Spurs are to take the competition seriously.

There have been suggestions that Harry might not be so committed to this competition, in view of our League position, but both teams are, after all, only 4 games from Wembley, which in Spurs' case would be the easiest path to Europe again next year. Like Liverpool though, Spurs also have options. They had six unused substitutes in Sunday's game at Eastlands, and Gareth Bale was not even in the 18. Bale is likely to start in place of the suspended Ekotto, and Ledley King is likely to sit this one out, in favour of Corluka or Dawson. Alan Hutton should be raring to go at right back. Maybe Modric will be rested, and a 4-man midfield might support two strikers. Who knows?

Liverpool fans could draw on positive omens such as the fact that Liverpool beat us on penalties the last time we met in Cup competition. On that occasion, there was no goal till extra time. Defoe had scored first, but Kanoute gave away a late penalty, and Liverpool took the tie to penalties which they won 4-3. Liverpool also fielded a less than full-strength side for that game. Then there was the 1982 League Cup Final, in which Spurs tired, conceded a late equaliser, then lost in extra time. That was the first domestic Cup Final Spurs lost.

Liverpool will also want revenge for their one defeat of this season just 11 days ago.

35 years ago, in the 1972-73 season, these two sides met 6 times in League and Cup matches. The first meeting was a 2-1 home league defeat in November, 1972. Then in December, Spurs travelled to Anfield for a League-Cup quarter final, which was drawn 1-1. Emlyn Hughes scored the home goal, whilst Martin Peters scored for Spurs. The replay was played just two days later (on a Wednesday night), and Spurs were the victors, with two goals by Martin Chivers and one by John Pratt. Ian Callaghan scored the away goal. We also met Liverpool in the UEFA Cup semi-final, losing only by virtue of the away goals rule. Those two League Cup games were played between two Saturday fixtures in the League. Spurs went on to win the League Cup that season too!

That 1972-73 season was the one when Pat Jennings won the Footballer of the Year award. Pat's two penalty saves in the March League game no doubt came into the reckoning. Oh, and one final omen that Liverpool fans may like - their team went on to win the League that season!

Omens really count for nothing, but with Spurs' form and Harry Redknapp's luck, who can argue against another dramatic Spurs win tomorrow night? Not me! I might even have a bet on 3-1.
