Rather spookily, Spurs (((Mobile))) formally announced the signature of Roman Pavlyuchenko almost at the moment that we went bottom of the league following today's outstanding victories by Portsmouth and Wigan, and even a point for West Brom at Bolton. Just as I was thinking that we would have to wait till Monday for the announcement, Spurs go and pull the rabbit out of the hat as a mini morale-booster to the faithful, several thousand of whom will travel to Stamford Bridge tomorrow for the anticipated ritual slaughter of the innocents.
It will take more than this one signing to convince us that Spurs can lift themselves out of the gloom, and we face a nervous Monday to see if we can shore up the defence, and find a midfield commander. (In saying this, I do of course take into account our summer signings of Gomes, Modric, Bentley and Giovani)
Of course, we also await an end to the prolonged Berbatov saga. Rumour has it that he was saying his farewells at The Lodge on Friday, but who is to say he will not make an appearance in Spurs colours tomorrow?
On the face of it then, Spurs travel to The Bridge with little hope of getting their first win of the season. If Spurs lose, it will be the first time since 1979-1980 that they have lost the first three league games of the season and the fourth time in the last fifty one seasons. The other two were 1974-75 and 1958-59. Spurs have not won at Stamford Bridge since February 10, 1990. Since then they have failed to win in the last eighteen league games, two FA Cup games and two League Cup games.
However, we are unbeaten against Chelsea in our last two games! They will desperately want revenge for their Carling Cup defeat, and also for the 4-4 draw at The Lane which went some way towards Chelsea's eventual failure to pip United to the Premier League post.
So many people who played an important part for Spurs in those games have gone, or are not bothered, chiefly the two main strikers - Keane and Berbatov. However, Spurs hero Jonathan Woodgate has demonstrated the right attitude, and perhaps by his example on and off the field, he can lead Spurs to a brave performance in this game.
Chelsea were on fire on Day One of the season, at home to Portsmouth, and got an efficient 1-0 win at Wigan. They have yet to concede a league goal, and "Big Phil" is managing a squad that has been strengthened with the signings of Deco and right back Jose Bosingwa, with whom Scolari is very familiar, having managed them as Portugal coach.
It was in August 1957 that a 17 year old Jimmy Greaves made his debut for Chelsea against Spurs, scoring their goal in a 1-1 draw. Greaves subsequently scored on his Spurs debut in 1961.
One ray of hope for Spurs could be that Chelsea will play their game, and perhaps not close down our flair players as tigerishly as our previous opponents. Spurs will get a chance to play their natural game, and I dream of a 1-1 draw.
Sometimes dreams do come true!
